Speech to Text: Free Online Voice Typing

This free speech to text tool turns your voice into written text as you talk. Choose your language, press Start and speak naturally; your words appear in the box in real time. Say “comma”, “full stop” or “new line” to add punctuation, then copy the text or download it as a file.

Press Start and allow the microphone when your browser asks.

Recognition is done by your browser’s speech service. In Chrome and Edge, audio is processed by Google or Microsoft to create the text. Nothing is sent to or stored on our server.

Quick answer: Pick your language, press Start listening, allow the microphone and talk. Your words appear in the box as you speak. Press the button again to stop, then copy or download your text.

  3. Speak clearly at a normal pace. Grey text below the box shows words still being recognised.
  4. Edit the text in the box at any time, even while dictating. Then copy it or download a .txt file.

Tips for better accuracy

  • Use a headset or keep the microphone close, and reduce background noise.

  • Pause briefly before punctuation commands.
  • Check names, numbers and technical terms afterwards, as these are the most common errors.

Which browsers work?

Speech recognition works in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows, Mac, Android and ChromeOS, and in Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Firefox does not support it yet. An internet connection is needed in most browsers because the speech service runs online.

Check your microphone first with the mic test. To hear text read aloud, use text to speech, and count your dictated words with the word counter.
