Image Compressor: Reduce Photo File Size Online
This image compressor makes photos and pictures smaller in file size while keeping them looking sharp. Drag the quality slider and see the new size and a live preview straight away, then download the compressed JPG or WebP. Great for email attachments, upload limits, websites and saving phone storage.
You can also paste an image with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and more.
Images are processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to or stored on our server.
Quick answer: Drop in a photo, leave the quality around 70 to 80, and download. Most phone photos shrink by 60 to 80 percent with no visible difference. Choosing a smaller maximum width saves even more.
How to use the image compressor
- Choose, drag in or paste the image you want to make smaller.
- Move the quality slider. Lower numbers give smaller files; the preview and new size update as you drag.
- Pick JPG for photos, WebP for the smallest files on websites, or PNG to keep every pixel.
- Optionally set a max width. A 4000-pixel phone photo shown on a website at 1200 pixels wastes most of its size.
- Click Download compressed image.
What quality setting should I use?
| Quality | Best for |
|---|---|
| 85 to 95 | Printing, portfolios and photos you will edit again |
| 70 to 85 | Websites, blogs, email and social media. Usually looks identical. |
| 50 to 70 | Thumbnails, previews and strict upload limits |
| Below 50 | Only when size matters more than looks; blocky artefacts appear |
How image compression works
JPG and WebP use lossy compression: they throw away fine detail that the eye barely notices, such as tiny colour changes in a blue sky. The lower the quality, the more detail is removed. PNG is lossless, so every pixel is kept, but files of photos stay large. Screenshots, logos and graphics with flat colours compress well as PNG; photos are much smaller as JPG or WebP.
Why compress images?
- Faster websites: images are often the heaviest part of a page. Smaller images improve load time and Core Web Vitals.
- Upload limits: many forms, job portals and government sites accept files under 100 KB to 2 MB.
- Email: stay under attachment limits when sending several photos.
- Storage: free up space on your phone or cloud drive.
To change the pixel dimensions exactly, use the image resizer. To switch between JPG, PNG and WebP, try the image converter.
