Best Domain Extension: Is .com Still Better in 2026?
In 2005 I argued that .com was the best domain extension: people type .com by default, browsers auto-completed “yahoo” to yahoo.com, and other extensions needed explaining. Since then hundreds of new extensions have launched, from .io and .ai to .app and .shop. Is .com still the best choice in 2026? Mostly yes, with some useful exceptions.

Quick answer: .com is still the safest choice for most websites because it’s the most trusted and memorable extension worldwide. Pick a country domain (like .in or .co.uk) if you mainly serve one country, .org for non-profits, and niche extensions like .io, .ai or .app only if they fit your brand and audience. Google treats all generic extensions equally for ranking.
Table of Contents
Why .com still leads
- Memorability: people assume a site ends in .com and often type it automatically.
- Trust: many users find unusual extensions less trustworthy in emails and search results.
- Resale value: .com names hold value better.
- Email: addresses at .com are less likely to be mistyped.
When another extension is better
- Country-code (ccTLD): .in, .co.uk, .de or .com.au signal local focus; see how to register a .in domain.
- .org: non-profits, communities and open source projects.
- .net: a fallback when the .com is taken, though less common now.
- .io, .ai, .dev, .app: popular with tech startups; .app and .dev require HTTPS.
- Brandable words: extensions like .shop or .blog can make short, readable names.
Does the extension affect SEO?
Google says generic extensions (including new ones like .xyz or .ai) are treated equally. Country domains help target that country but can limit global reach. Content, links and user experience matter far more.
Tips for choosing
- Check the .com first; if it’s taken, consider small name changes before switching extension.
- Compare renewal prices, not just first-year deals; some new extensions renew at high prices.
- Register common misspellings or your country domain for brand protection.
- Turn on auto-renew and secure your domain with registrar lock and 2FA.

FAQ
Is .com better for SEO than .net?
No direct ranking difference, but .com tends to earn more clicks and trust.
Are .ai and .io domains a good idea?
They’re fine for tech brands, but they’re country codes (Anguilla and the British Indian Ocean Territory) and often cost more to renew.
Should I buy multiple extensions?
Buying the main ones and redirecting them to your site helps protect your brand.

I think it’s fair to note that Google has higher PR weightage on .EDU and .ORG than .COM – may be a point of consideration when choosing a domain name.
The Firefox example is not entirely correct. It is true that after typing yahoo, you are taken to yahoo.com. However, if you type sourceforge, you are forwarded to sourceforge.net instead of sourceforge.com. Why? Because Firefox doesn’t just add a .com to your keyword but instead looks up your keyword with Google and sends you to the search result with the highest significance. Therefore, when relying on the keyword feature in Firefox, a good pagerank with Google is more effective than a .com domain…
