Reverse Text Generator: Write Text Backwards

This reverse text generator writes any text backwards in one click. Choose to reverse every letter (“olleh”), the order of the words, the letters inside each word, or the order of lines in a list. It handles emoji and accented letters properly, which many simple reversers break.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our server.

Quick answer: Paste your text and keep Reverse all letters selected to write it completely backwards. Switch the option to reverse the word order instead (“world hello”), reverse each word on its own (“olleh dlrow”) or flip the order of lines.

Why use backwards text?

  • Puzzles and games: hide quiz answers, riddles or treasure-hunt clues.
  • Checking palindromes: words and phrases that read the same both ways, such as “racecar” or “Was it a car or a cat I saw” (ignoring spaces and capitals).
  • Lists: flip a newest-first list into oldest-first, such as a changelog or a playlist.
  • Mirror writing practice: Leonardo da Vinci famously wrote many notes in mirror script, from right to left.
  • Testing software: developers reverse strings to test how apps handle unusual text.

Emoji and accents stay intact

Simple reversers flip the raw code units of the text, which can break emoji such as 👍🏽 or family emoji into odd symbols and detach accents from their letters. This tool reverses whole visible characters (grapheme clusters) using your browser’s built-in text segmentation, so emoji, flags and accented letters like é come out correctly.

Backwards text vs mirrored and upside down text

Reversed text only changes the order of characters; the letters themselves face the normal way. Real mirror writing would also flip each letter’s shape, which plain text can’t do. For letters that actually look rotated, use our upside down text generator. To sort lines A to Z instead of reversing them, use the alphabetical order tool.

How to reverse text in Excel or code

  • Excel 365: =TEXTJOIN("",TRUE,MID(A1,SEQUENCE(LEN(A1),,LEN(A1),-1),1))
  • JavaScript: [...str].reverse().join('')
  • Python: text[::-1]
