How to Start a Blog in 2026: 9 Simple Steps for Beginners
How to start a blog is still one of the most common questions people ask, and 2026 is a fine time to do it. A blog gives you a home on the web that you own, unlike a social media account, and good posts keep bringing visitors from Google for years. QuickOnlineTips started on Blogger in 2004 and moved to WordPress in 2006. Here is how to start a blog step by step, updated from Sourish’s original guest tips.

Quick answer: Pick a topic you can write about for years, register a domain name, buy WordPress hosting and install WordPress, choose a fast theme, add a few essential plugins (SEO, security, backup, caching), write five to ten genuinely useful posts, set up Google Search Console, and publish on a regular schedule.
Table of Contents
Why start a blog?
- Share what you know and build a reputation in your field.
- Support a business with helpful content that attracts customers.
- Earn from ads, affiliate links, sponsorships or your own products.
- Own your audience and content instead of renting space on social apps.
How to start a blog: 9 steps
1. Choose a niche
Pick a topic you know and enjoy, that people search for, and that you won’t run out of ideas for. “Budget travel in India” or “home espresso” beats “my thoughts”. Use keyword research to check demand.
2. Choose a blogging platform
- WordPress.org on your own hosting: full control, any theme or plugin. Best for most serious blogs.
- WordPress.com: hosted for you; easy, but plugins need a paid plan. You can move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org later.
- Blogger: free and simple, but limited.
- Substack or Ghost: good for newsletter-style blogs with paid subscriptions.
3. Get a domain name
Short, easy to spell and say, ideally a .com or your country’s domain. Many hosts include a free domain for the first year.
4. Buy hosting and install WordPress
Shared WordPress hosting from Hostinger, SiteGround, Bluehost and others costs a few dollars a month and includes one-click WordPress, free SSL and backups.
5. Pick a fast theme
Lightweight themes such as Kadence, GeneratePress, Astra or the default Twenty Twenty-Five load quickly and look good on phones.
6. Add essential plugins
- An SEO plugin such as Rank Math or Yoast.
- A backup plugin and a security plugin (see the best WordPress security plugins).
- A caching plugin, if your host doesn’t provide one.
- An anti-spam plugin for comments.
Keep plugins few; each one adds weight and risk.
7. Create key pages
About, Contact and Privacy Policy pages build trust and are needed for ad networks such as AdSense.
8. Write your first posts
Write five to ten detailed posts that answer real questions better than what’s already ranking. Use clear headings, your own examples and screenshots. Quality matters more than posting every day.
9. Get indexed and promote
Add your site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap; here is how to get your blog indexed by Google. Share posts where your readers hang out, build an email list from day one, and connect with other bloggers in your niche.
Mistakes new bloggers make
- Choosing a topic only for money, then losing interest.
- Filling the site with ads and widgets before there are readers.
- Copying or mass-producing thin AI content that Google ignores.
- Giving up after three months. Most blogs take six to twelve months to see steady search traffic.
FAQ
How much does it cost to start a blog?
Free on Blogger or WordPress.com, or roughly $3 to $10 a month for hosting plus a domain for a self-hosted WordPress blog.
Can I start a blog for free?
Yes, but a free subdomain and limited features make it harder to grow and monetize. Upgrade once you’re sure you’ll keep going.
How do bloggers make money?
Mainly through display ads, affiliate links, sponsored posts, digital products, services and paid newsletters.

Thanks for your comment Chris , sticking to a niche is very important , one should start with small according to Google Anti- Spam Staff and gradually roll on and add more . Ones content must be a mix of quality blog posts , videos etc
During the first few months , no adverts at all and not go into link sharing .
Simple but important! Content play always important role. So before writing any topic it’s more necessary to research and find out niche content. Overall your content is important.
