Top AdSense Earners: Who Earns the Highest Google AdSense Income?

Who are the top AdSense earners, and could a blog really make thousands of dollars a day from Google ads? This article looks back at the famous 2006 list of AdSense millionaires, what happened to those sites, and what earning from AdSense looks like for publishers today.

Top AdSense earners guide card

Quick answer: In 2006 the best-known AdSense earners included Markus Frind of PlentyOfFish, Kevin Rose of Digg, Jeremy Shoemaker of ShoeMoney and Jason Calacanis of Weblogs, Inc., with reported earnings of over $100,000 a month. Google does not publish a list of its top publishers, so every figure you see is self-reported. Today larger sites usually combine ads with affiliate, sponsorship and other income rather than relying on AdSense alone.

The 2006 list of top AdSense earners

Back in 2006, while my own blog loaded with Google AdSense ads was making a few dollars a week, some publishers were laughing all the way to the bank. John Chow published a list of the top 8 Google AdSense earners, and it got everyone talking. The top names were:

  • Markus Frind, PlentyOfFish.com: a free online dating site run from home, reported at about $300,000 per month (over $10,000 a day) from up to 500 million page views a month.
  • Kevin Rose, Digg.com: the hugely popular social news site, reported at about $250,000 per month.
  • Jeremy Shoemaker, ShoeMoney: a search engine marketer, reported at about $140,000 per month.
  • Jason Calacanis, Weblogs, Inc.: a network of blogs, reported at about $120,000 per month, or over $4,000 a day. I remember he was making about $2,000 a day a year earlier.

Google AdSense cheque shared by PlentyOfFish founder Markus Frind

Markus Frind even shared his AdSense cheque. It surprised many bloggers, who thought dating sites were a low-paying niche with cheap keywords. I was sure there were many more big AdSense publishers who chose to stay anonymous and quietly banked their earnings.

What happened to those sites

  • PlentyOfFish grew into one of the largest dating sites and was bought by Match Group in July 2015 for $575 million in cash.
  • Digg lost much of its audience in the early 2010s and changed owners; it is no longer the traffic giant it was in 2006.
  • Weblogs, Inc. had already been bought by AOL in 2005.

The lesson: the biggest AdSense earners were huge traffic sites, and most of them eventually made their real money from building and selling a business, not from ad cheques alone.

How much do top AdSense earners make today?

Nobody outside Google knows. Google does not publish what individual publishers earn. Any “top AdSense earners” list you find online is based on what people chose to reveal, often to promote a course or a blog.

The model has also changed. In 2024 AdSense moved from paying mainly per click to paying per impression, so traffic volume and ad viewability matter more than ever. Larger publishers often move from AdSense to managed ad networks, which usually require a minimum amount of traffic.

How to earn more from AdSense in 2026

  1. Grow useful traffic first. Earnings follow page views. Write content people search for and keep older posts updated.
  2. Place ads sensibly. Use Auto ads or a few well-placed units, such as AdSense ads inside blog post content, without hurting the reading experience.
  3. Control what shows. Block ad categories or advertisers that compete with your own offers, and review newer formats before turning them on.
  4. Diversify. Add affiliate links, sponsorships or your own products so you don’t depend on one ad program.
  5. Consider ad networks once you grow. Networks such as Ezoic, Mediavine and Raptive are common next steps for larger sites. Check each one’s current traffic requirements.

You can sign up or manage your account at Google AdSense. If you are in India, see how AdSense payments by wire transfer work, and remember that ad income is taxable: here is our older note on AdSense income tax.

FAQ

Who was the highest AdSense earner?

The best-known example is Markus Frind of PlentyOfFish, who reported earning around $300,000 a month from AdSense in 2006. Google has never confirmed a top earner.

Does Google publish AdSense earnings of publishers?

No. Google does not publish what individual publishers earn. Published figures come from the publishers themselves.

Can a small blog still earn money from AdSense?

Yes, but income depends on traffic, niche and audience location. Most small blogs earn modest amounts, so it helps to add other income sources.

Does AdSense pay per click or per impression?

Since 2024 AdSense pays publishers mainly per impression rather than per click, so the number of viewable ad impressions matters most.

  9. The secret is how you include the Adsense box – WITHIN – your article i.e. in either mid way or just after first paragraph of your actual original content. What happens is that there are more chances of the reader clicking on any of the titles.
