Favicon Size Guide: Keep Your Favicon Small (and Why It Matters)
Your favicon is the tiny icon that shows on browser tabs, bookmarks and in Google search results. Because browsers request it so often, getting the favicon size right matters more than you might think: a bloated icon file wastes bandwidth on every visit, while one that is too small looks blurry in search results. This guide covers the right dimensions, file size and setup in 2026.

Quick answer: Use a square favicon, larger than 48×48 pixels for Google Search, and keep the file small, ideally a few kilobytes. A favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 pixel sizes plus a PNG for larger uses covers most needs. In WordPress, set it under Appearance > Customize > Site Identity > Site Icon.

Can a favicon really hog bandwidth?
Yes, on a busy site. In a well-known case, developer Scott Hanselman found that his favicon was a bandwidth hog: a 70 KB high-quality icon used 27 GB of his monthly bandwidth. Cutting it to under 4 KB saved around 25 GB that month. We wrote about this back in 2007, and the lesson still holds: an icon that loads on almost every page view should be as light as possible.
Today, browser caching and CDNs reduce repeat downloads, and many hosting plans include generous bandwidth, so a favicon is rarely a big cost. But a heavy icon still adds weight to every first visit and to every bot that crawls your site, so there is no reason to make it large.
The right favicon size in 2026
- Shape: square (1:1).
- Google Search: Google’s favicon guidelines require at least 8×8 pixels and recommend larger than 48×48 pixels so it looks sharp.
- Browser tabs: 16×16 and 32×32 pixels.
- Phones and home screens: a larger PNG, such as 180×180 pixels for an apple-touch-icon.
- File size: aim for a few kilobytes for favicon.ico. Simple shapes and few colours compress best.
How to make a lightweight favicon
- Start simple. A bold letter or symbol with two or three colours reads better at 16 pixels than a detailed logo.
- Create the files with a free generator. Our guide on how to create a favicon online free lists good options.
- Include only the sizes you need in favicon.ico (16, 32 and 48 pixels is plenty). Extra large sizes inside the .ico make the file heavier.
- Compress PNG versions with an image optimizer before uploading.
- Check the file size in your file manager or browser developer tools.
How to add a favicon
In WordPress
Go to Appearance > Customize > Site Identity and upload a square image as the Site Icon. WordPress creates the sizes it needs and adds the tags for you. Some themes and block themes place this setting under Settings > General or the Site Editor instead.
On any website
Upload your favicon to your site and add a link tag in the page head, for example:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">Make sure robots.txt does not block the favicon or your home page, so Google can fetch it. Keep the favicon URL stable; Google can take days or weeks to pick up a change.
What changed since 2007
When we first wrote this post, favicons were mostly 16×16 icons made in desktop tools such as Microangelo Icon Editor, and bandwidth was a real cost on small hosting plans. Now favicons appear in Google search results and on phone home screens, so they need larger sizes, while caching and CDNs make the bandwidth risk much smaller. Free favicon hosting services from that era, such as MyFavatar, are no longer needed; see our note on favicon hosting for the simple modern approach.
FAQ
What size should a favicon be?
Square, with 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions for browsers, and larger than 48×48 pixels for Google Search. Add a 180×180 PNG for Apple devices.
How big should the favicon file be?
As small as possible. A few kilobytes is a good target for favicon.ico; anything in the tens of kilobytes is worth optimizing.
Why does Google not show my favicon?
Check that it is square, larger than 8×8 pixels, linked from your home page and not blocked by robots.txt. Then wait, as Google may take a few weeks to update it.
Can I use a PNG instead of an ICO file?
Yes. Google supports PNG, ICO and several other formats, and modern browsers accept PNG favicons.

Right after reading this post, I rushed to check the size of my favicon…and was relieved to see it is just 1.37k :)
It sounds really really exagerrated. To get that kinda bandwidth usage means atleast a million hits.
Cool tips. Anywau, a favicon is essential for a blog. I am planning to design a attractive favicon so long for my blog.
That was informative!
Cheers!
