How to Permanently Delete Files from Your Computer (2026 Guide)
Think emptying the Recycle Bin removes your files for good? It does not. When you delete a file, the computer usually just marks the space as free, and recovery tools can often bring the file back. That matters when you sell, donate or recycle a computer. Here is how to permanently delete files in 2026, with tools that still work and the big change that SSDs brought.

Quick answer: To permanently delete files on a hard drive, use a shredder like Eraser or BleachBit. On SSDs, turn on encryption (BitLocker or FileVault) and use the built-in reset: Windows “Reset this PC” with “Clean the drive”, or macOS “Erase All Content and Settings”. For a whole old drive, use the SSD maker’s Secure Erase tool or physically destroy it.

Why deleted files can be recovered
Deleting a file removes its entry from the file system, not the data itself. Until new data overwrites that space, data recovery software can often restore it. That is great when you delete something by mistake, but a privacy risk when a drive leaves your hands.
Hard drives vs SSDs
- Hard drives (HDD): overwriting the file’s space with random data makes recovery practically impossible. File shredders work well.
- SSDs: the drive spreads writes across its memory chips, and TRIM clears deleted blocks automatically. Shredding single files is unreliable on SSDs, so encryption and the drive’s own secure erase are the better tools.
Best tools to permanently delete files
- Eraser (Windows): free, open-source file shredder. Right-click a file or folder and choose Erase, or schedule wiping of free space. Best for hard drives.
- BleachBit (Windows and Linux): cleans junk files and includes a “Shred files” option and free-space wiping.
- Windows cipher command: built in. Run
cipher /w:C:\in Command Prompt to overwrite free space on drive C so previously deleted files cannot be recovered. - Drive maker tools: Samsung Magician, WD Dashboard, Crucial Storage Executive and others offer Secure Erase for their SSDs.
The tools in our original list have aged: DBAN (Darik’s Boot and Nuke) is no longer developed and does not work properly on SSDs, so use the options above instead.
How to wipe a computer before selling it
Windows 11 and 10
- Back up your files and sign out of accounts.
- Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
- Choose Remove everything, then Change settings and turn on Clean data (also called “Clean the drive”).
Mac
- Sign out of iCloud and Apple ID services.
- Go to System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. On encrypted Apple silicon and T2 Macs, this erases the encryption keys instantly.
Use encryption from day one
The best protection is to encrypt your drive before you ever need to delete anything. Turn on BitLocker or Device Encryption in Windows, or FileVault on a Mac. If the drive is encrypted, wiping the keys makes the old data unreadable.
Old drives you no longer need
If a drive is broken or you are replacing it, perhaps during an old PC upgrade, physical destruction is the safest end: drill through the platters of a hard drive or use a certified e-waste service that provides a destruction certificate.
FAQ
Does formatting a drive delete files permanently?
A quick format does not. A full format in Windows overwrites hard drive data with zeros, but for SSDs use Secure Erase or an encrypted reset.
Can I shred files on an SSD?
Shredding tools are not reliable on SSDs. Use encryption and the drive’s secure erase instead.
Are deleted files on my phone recoverable?
Modern iPhones and Android phones are encrypted by default, so a factory reset makes old data unreadable.
