Alphabetical Order Tool: Sort Any List A to Z
Put any list in alphabetical order in a second. Paste names, words, titles, keywords or references, one per line or separated by commas, and this free tool sorts them from A to Z as you type. You can also sort Z to A, by length or at random, and remove duplicates.
Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never sent to or stored on our server.
Quick answer: Paste your list into the top box. The sorted list appears below straight away. Change the sort order, tick Remove duplicates if needed, then click Copy sorted list.
How to alphabetize a list
- Paste your list. Each item can be on its own line, or separated by commas, semicolons or spaces; the tool detects which.
- Choose the sort order: A to Z, Z to A, shortest or longest first, reversed or shuffled.
- Pick the options you need, such as ignoring “The” for book and band names.
- Copy the result. It keeps the same separator as your original list.
Sorting options explained
- Ignore upper and lower case: “apple” and “Apple” sort together. Turn it off to keep capitals and small letters apart.
- Sort numbers naturally: “item 2” comes before “item 10”, the way people expect. Without it, computers sort by the first digit, putting 10 before 2.
- Ignore “The”, “A” and “An”: the library and record-shop rule, so “The Beatles” files under B. The words stay in the result; they are only skipped while sorting.
- Remove duplicates: keeps the first copy of each item, useful for email lists, keyword lists and guest lists.
- Random (shuffle): mixes the list fairly, for a random running order or turn order. To pick winners from a list instead, see our random number generator.
Accented letters such as é and ñ sort next to their plain letters, using your browser’s language rules.
How to sort alphabetically in Word, Excel and Google Docs
- Microsoft Word: select the list, go to Home > Sort (the A-Z icon), choose Paragraphs and Text, then Ascending.
- Excel and Google Sheets: select the column and use Data > Sort A to Z, or the formula
=SORT(A1:A100). - Google Docs: there is no built-in sort, so paste the list here, sort it and paste it back.

FAQ
How do I put a list in alphabetical order quickly?
Paste it into the box above. It is sorted A to Z instantly; click Copy sorted list.
Can I sort a comma-separated list?
Yes. The tool detects commas automatically and gives the result back as a comma-separated list.
Why does 10 come before 2 in other tools?
Simple sorting compares characters one at a time, and “1” comes before “2”. Keep Sort numbers naturally ticked to sort numbers by their value.
How many items can I sort?
Thousands. Sorting happens in your browser, so even long lists take a fraction of a second.
