Peg Solitaire: Play the Classic Peg Puzzle Online

Play peg solitaire, the classic one-player peg board puzzle, free online. The cross-shaped board starts full of pegs with only the center hole empty. Jump one peg over another into an empty hole to remove the peg you jumped. Keep going until no jumps are left, and try to finish with a single peg.

32Pegs left
–Best (fewest left)

Quick answer: Click a peg that can jump, then click the green empty hole two spaces away. The peg in between is removed. Jumps go straight up, down, left or right, never diagonally. The game ends when no peg can jump. One peg left is a perfect score, and one peg in the very center is the ultimate finish.

How to play peg solitaire

  1. The board has 33 holes in a plus shape. All but the center hole start with a peg.
  2. A move is a jump: one peg hops over a neighboring peg into an empty hole directly behind it.
  3. The peg that was jumped over is taken off the board.
  4. Keep jumping until no moves are left. Fewer pegs left means a better score. Use Undo to take back a move.

Peg solitaire tips

  • Work from the edges in. Clear the outer arms early so pegs are not stranded there at the end.
  • Avoid lonely pegs. A peg with no neighbors can never be removed.
  • Think in groups of three. Many solutions clear blocks of three pegs with a set pattern of jumps.
  • Save the center for last. Aim your final jump into the middle hole.

Peg solitaire was popular at the French court in the late 1600s and has been a favorite puzzle ever since. For more one-player puzzles, try the sliding puzzle or the Tower of Hanoi.
