Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to or stored on our server.
Quick answer: The converter starts at the current time in your own time zone. Change the date, time or “In” city and every row updates. New York is 9.5 hours behind India from March to early November (US daylight saving time) and 10.5 hours behind in winter, while London is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 hours in winter.
How to use the time zone converter
- Pick a date and time, or click Now. The 9 AM, Noon and 5 PM buttons set common meeting times.
- Choose the city that time belongs to in the In box.
- Read the local time, date and UTC offset for each city. Times in green fall within normal 9 to 5 work hours.
- Add or remove cities. Your list is saved in this browser for next time. Click Copy times to paste them into a calendar invite or email.
Daylight saving time
The converter uses your browser’s built-in time zone database, so daylight saving changes are applied on the right dates. That matters because countries switch on different days: the US moves clocks on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, while the UK and EU switch on the last Sundays of March and October. For a few weeks each year the gap between New York and London is four hours instead of five. India, China, Japan and most of Africa do not use daylight saving time.
Common time differences

| London (GMT) | India (IST) | India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead |
| New York (EST) | India (IST) | India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead |
| India (IST) | Tokyo (JST) | Tokyo is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead |
| London (GMT) | Sydney (AEDT) | Sydney is 11 hours ahead in the northern winter |
Tips for scheduling across time zones
- Write times with the zone, such as “3 PM ET / 8 PM UK / 12:30 AM IST”, so nobody has to guess.
- Late afternoon in Europe is usually the best overlap with both the US East Coast and India.
- For US West Coast and Asia-Pacific calls, early morning in California is evening in Singapore and Tokyo.
Counting down to the meeting? Use the countdown timer. To convert an epoch time, try the Unix timestamp converter, or add up time with the hours calculator.
FAQ
What is UTC?
Coordinated Universal Time, the world’s reference clock. It is the same as GMT for everyday use, and every time zone is written as an offset from it, such as UTC+5:30 for India.
Why do some places have half-hour offsets?
India (UTC+5:30), Iran, Newfoundland and parts of Australia chose offsets that match their geography better. Nepal even uses UTC+5:45.
