15 Tips to Get the Best Deals in Any Online Shopping Festival (India, 2026)

Every year India’s biggest online sales, Amazon’s Great Indian Festival, Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and the Diwali sales that follow, promise huge discounts, limited stock and lightning deals. This guide started in 2012 for India’s first Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF), and the same rules still decide who gets the best deals. Here are 15 tips to make the most of any online shopping festival in 2026 without overspending.

Tips to get the best deals in an online shopping festival in India

Quick answer: To get the best deals in an online shopping festival, make a buy list early, track prices for a few weeks so you can spot fake discounts, use the bank card or UPI offer that gives the biggest instant discount, shop in the first hours of lightning deals, check the seller and return policy, and be careful with no-cost EMI and add-on “freebies”. Only buy what you planned to buy.

15 tips for the best online sale deals

1. Make a buy list now

Write down what you really need and your budget for each item. Add the products to your wishlist or cart before the sale so you can check out in seconds.

2. Track prices before the sale

Many “sale” prices are close to normal prices. Use a price tracker such as Keepa (for Amazon) or Buyhatke to see a product’s price history and set alerts.

3. Get early access

Amazon Prime and Flipkart’s membership tiers usually get early access to sale deals. If you were going to buy a membership anyway, buying it before the sale can pay off.

4. Be there first for lightning deals

Limited-stock deals open at fixed times and often sell out within minutes. Keep the app updated, stay logged in and save your address and payment method in advance.

5. Use the best bank and UPI offers

The biggest extra discount usually comes from the partner bank’s credit or debit card offer, often 10% instant off up to a cap. Check the minimum order value and whether it works on EMI.

6. Watch the no-cost EMI trap

No-cost EMI is useful for expensive items, but the bank may charge GST on interest and a processing fee, and it nudges you to spend more. Buy only what you can afford easily.

7. Compare across shops

Check the same model on several sites. Our list of the best online shopping sites in India is a good starting point.

8. Try specialty shops

Brand stores and niche shops sometimes beat marketplace prices and stock more variants, especially for shoes, cosmetics and electronics.

9. Free is not always better

Bundled accessories and gift vouchers sound good but often carry conditions. Compare the final price without the freebie.

10. Check exchange offers carefully

Exchange values for old phones and appliances depend on condition checks at delivery. Don’t count on the maximum amount shown.

11. Confirm delivery charges and dates

Check delivery fees for low-value orders and how long delivery will take during the sale rush.

12. Make sure they deliver to you

Some deals and large appliances ship only to certain PIN codes. Enter yours before you plan your purchase.

13. Know who is selling

On a marketplace, the seller, not the site, is responsible for the product. Prefer sellers with good ratings and items marked as fulfilled or assured.

14. Read the return and warranty terms

Return windows vary by category and seller, and some sale items are replacement-only. Check the brand warranty is valid in India.

15. Avoid sale scams

Fake “festival offer” links on WhatsApp and SMS are common. Buy only in the official apps or websites, and never share OTPs.

Where it started: GOSF 2012

Google India launched the Great Online Shopping Festival on 12 December 2012, nicknamed “Cyber Wednesday” after the US Cyber Monday. Dozens of Indian shops joined, stocks ran out fast, and HDFC cards gave extra reward points. GOSF ran for a few years before Amazon and Flipkart’s own festival sales took over.

Some Indian eCommerce sites misused this festival I should say.. usual prices tagged as discounts.. bad..

    1. Thats right. Many displayed discounts on MRP, which are usually there otherwise also. Some inflated prices and discounted them for GOSF.
