Where to Download Old Versions of Software Safely (2026)
Sometimes the latest release won’t run on an older computer, removes a feature you relied on, or adds ads that weren’t there before. In 2005 we pointed readers to OldVersion.com for old versions of software. It’s still around, and there are now several other sources, including official archives from the developers themselves. Here’s where to look and how to stay safe.

Quick answer: Check the developer’s own site first, since many keep official archives of previous releases (Mozilla, VLC, LibreOffice, 7-Zip and others). If not, use trusted download sites that keep version histories, such as Uptodown, FileHorse, Softpedia or OldVersion.com, and scan every file before installing. Avoid old versions of browsers and internet-facing apps, as they have unpatched security holes.
Table of Contents
Why use an older version
- Your computer or operating system can’t run the latest release.
- A new version removed a feature or changed the interface you prefer.
- The software switched from free to subscription or added ads.
- A plugin, file format or workflow only works with a specific version.
Best places to find old versions of software
- Official archives: for example Mozilla’s Firefox release archive (external site) and VLC’s download archive (external site). Safest option.
- OldVersion.com (external site): the long-running archive we featured in 2005, covering Windows, Mac and Android apps.
- Uptodown (external site): keeps older versions of many Windows and Android apps, with virus scans.
- FileHorse (external site) and Softpedia (external site): version histories for popular Windows and Mac software.
- Internet Archive software collection (external site): for discontinued and vintage programs.
- Package managers: winget, Chocolatey and Homebrew can install specific versions for advanced users.
Stay safe with old software
- Scan downloads with Windows Security or VirusTotal (external site).
- Don’t use outdated browsers, email clients or VPNs online.
- Turn off auto-update for that app only if you must, and keep your operating system updated.
- Avoid cracked or “patched” builds; they’re a common malware source.
- Back up before downgrading, as newer files may not open in old versions.

Free software, yes. For paid software you still need a valid license for that version.
Is OldVersion.com safe?
It has been running since 2001, but scan any download and prefer official archives where possible.
How do I downgrade an Android app?
Uninstall the current version, then install an older APK from a trusted source like Uptodown or APKMirror. You’ll need to allow installs from that source.

What are you talking about? If adaware 7 finds nothing, then there is nothing more. SE will not find more than the new version. They are built upon one another.
I have tried to find the version of Ad Aware SE personal but have had no luck on any of the recommended sites. I had it put on my computer Dec 2005 but it would not update lately so I removed it and went to their site to reinstall it but did not find it. Wish someone could help me with this. It found spyware on my computer where Spybot found nothing. Now Spybot finds a couple but Ad Aware 7 finds nothing.
have you tried looking on the website http://www.oldversion.com or maybe http://www.oldapps.com
