HEX, RGB and HSL explained

FormatExampleUsed in
HEX#1A73E8Websites, CSS, Canva, Figma and most design apps
RGBrgb(26, 115, 232)CSS, Photoshop, PowerPoint and Office
HSLhsl(214, 82%, 51%)CSS, when you want to make a color lighter or darker easily

All three describe the same color. HEX is just the three RGB numbers (0 to 255) written in base 16.

Ideas for using it

  • Match a brand: take the exact colors from a logo for slides, posters or a website.
  • Design from a photo: build a palette from a holiday picture, a painting or a product shot.
  • Fix a website: find the color of a button or heading from a screenshot.
  • Home and fashion: match paint, fabric or makeup shades to a photo, keeping in mind that screens and lighting change how colors look.

Photos have many tiny color variations, so neighbouring pixels can give slightly different codes. Zooming into flat areas gives the most reliable result. Convert codes with the hex to RGB converter, build matching sets with the color palette generator, or browse web safe colors.

No. The image is drawn on a canvas in your browser and never leaves your device.

Why does the picked color differ slightly from the original?

JPG compression and color profiles can shift colors by a few points. For exact brand colors, check the brand’s official guidelines.
