Quick answer: Click Generate for one random letter from A to Z. To get several, change How many letters, and tick No repeats if each letter may appear only once.
How to use the random letter generator
- Choose how many letters you need, from 1 to 1,000.
- Pick which letters to use: the whole alphabet, vowels, consonants, or one half of it.
- Choose upper case, lower case or both, and how to separate the letters.
- Type any letters to leave out, such as Q, X and Z for word games, then click Generate.
Each letter is picked with your browser’s cryptographic random generator, so all allowed letters have the same chance.
Games that use a random letter
- Scattergories-style games: roll a letter, then name an animal, a country and a food that start with it. Leave out Q, X and Z to keep it fair.
- Stop (also called Tutti Frutti, Basta or Bus Stop): the same idea, with a timer and categories on paper.
- Word chains and Pictionary: a random starting letter breaks the habit of always picking the same words.
- Countdown-style letters round: generate 9 letters with a mix of vowels and consonants, then find the longest word.
Ideas for teachers and parents
- Letter recognition: show one large letter and ask children to say its name or sound.
- Upper and lower case matching: generate lowercase letters and ask for the capital.
- Phonics practice: use Vowels only or Consonants only to focus on one group.
- Handwriting: generate 10 letters and write each one three times.
- Random groups: give each group a letter from A to M and let them pick a topic starting with it.
Other uses
Designers and developers use random letters for placeholder initials and test data. Writers use them for prompts (“write a poem where every line starts with the next random letter”). If you need numbers rather than letters, use our random number generator; to pick from a list of names, use spin the wheel.
FAQ

Click Generate with the default settings. You get one capital letter from A to Z, each with a 1 in 26 chance.
Can I get letters without repeats?
Yes. Tick No repeats. You can get up to 26 different letters, or 52 if you choose both cases.
Which letters are vowels?
The vowels option uses A, E, I, O and U. Y is counted as a consonant.
Can I generate random letters and numbers together?
Not on this page. For mixed strings, a password generator is the right tool; we plan to add one soon.
