When Google Deleted Its Own Blog by Mistake: Lessons for Bloggers

Can a blog really be deleted by mistake? It happened to Google itself. In March 2006 the Official Google Blog, hosted on Google’s own Blogger platform, suddenly disappeared. Google later explained that it had mistakenly deleted the blog, which freed up its blogspot address for a short time, and another user briefly claimed it before handing it back. I was a regular reader and a Blogger user at the time, and it was a wake-up call. Here’s what happened and how to protect your own blog in 2026.

Google Blog deleted by mistake

Quick answer: In March 2006 Google accidentally deleted its own Official Google Blog on Blogger, and someone briefly registered the freed address before it was restored. To protect your blog today: back it up regularly, use your own domain name instead of a free subdomain, turn on 2-Step Verification, limit who has admin access, and know how to restore a deleted Blogger blog from the “Deleted blogs” list.

What happened to the Google Blog in 2006

  • The Official Google Blog went offline without warning.
  • Its googleblog.blogspot.com address briefly showed content from a different user.
  • Google posted that the blog had been mistakenly deleted by its own team, which let the address be temporarily claimed, and that there was no system-wide Blogger vulnerability.
  • The blog was restored within hours. Google’s company blog has since moved to blog.google, on its own domain.

The lesson: one wrong click can take a blog down

If you run several blogs from one account, with many tabs open, it’s easy to delete or edit the wrong one. And if experienced engineers at Google can do it, so can any of us. A lost subdomain is even worse, because your readers and search rankings are tied to that address.

How to protect your blog in 2026

1. Back up regularly

On Blogger, go to Settings > Manage blog > Back up content to download an XML file of posts and comments, and save a copy of your theme. See how to back up your Blogger blog. On WordPress, use your host’s backups plus a backup plugin.

2. Use your own domain

A custom domain belongs to you even if something happens to the platform. If you outgrow Blogger, see how to import Blogger to WordPress and redirect Blogger to WordPress without losing traffic.

3. Secure your account

Turn on 2-Step Verification for the Google account that owns the blog, and give other people author access rather than admin access where you can. Protect your domain too: see these domain name security tips.

4. Know how to undelete a Blogger blog

Blogger keeps deleted blogs for a limited time. Open Blogger, click the blog menu, find the blog under Deleted blogs and click Undelete. The Blogger Help Center has the current steps. After the grace period, a deleted blog is gone for good.

FAQ

Can I recover a deleted Blogger blog?

Yes, if you act quickly: look under Deleted blogs in Blogger and click Undelete.

What happens to my blogspot address if I change it?

Your old address stops pointing to your blog, and links to it may break. Use a custom domain to avoid this.

Where is the official Google Blog now?

At blog.google, Google’s own domain, rather than on blogspot.com.

  4. I can’t help but wonder if Google’s blog was hacked at that point and they just claimed they deleted it accidentally.

Oh well. Whatever you say mighty Google, who dares to question?

  5. Yeah that would definitely be scary! Something people should always do is back up your work on anything that you do involving websites, blogs or anything in fact. People are human, people make mistakes and sometimes computers crash. My suggestion is back up your back up. You can never be too careful. My saying is better be safe then sorry.

Great blog, keep up the great work.

  6. That’s scary. I’m going to have to look into some kind of backup. I know there are some new online services.

  7. i deleted my blogger account by mistake! i cant believe how i did it, i got so upset really!

i sent them email now! and im still waiting if they can recover it or not! im so hopeless, dont know what to do.

  8. I also left blogger a year ago and someone registered my domain and used it for their own purpose. They recently deleted it so I’m happy again.

I agree that it is very easy to delete your blog on blogger. Not so easy on my new service at Typepad. I don’t understand why they can’t give you a period of time like 24 hours or a week to recover your posts before they are permanently deleted.

Also, why did they bother to buy blogger if they were going to ruin the darn thing? I still love it and would come back in a second if they had a paid version or even a business version of blogger.

The templates are very attractive and it just makes your blog look like a real website. Uggh.
