How to Add Blogger to Google Search Console (Verify and Sitemap, 2026)
In May 2006, Google Sitemaps (the tool that became Search Console) added META tag verification, finally letting Blogger users prove they owned their blogs. I had already moved to WordPress by then, but it was great news for Blogspot bloggers. Here’s how to add Blogger to Google Search Console in 2026 and submit your sitemap.

Quick answer: In Google Search Console, click Add property and choose URL prefix with your full blog address (for example https://yourblog.blogspot.com/). Pick the HTML tag method, copy the meta tag, paste it into Blogger’s Theme > Edit HTML just after <head>, save, and click Verify. Then submit sitemap.xml under Sitemaps.
Table of Contents
Step 1: Add a property
- Blogspot address: use a URL prefix property, since you can’t edit DNS for blogspot.com.
- Custom domain: a Domain property verified by DNS TXT record covers http, https, www and subdomains. See how to verify with a DNS TXT record.
Google explains each property type in its add a property guide (external site).
Step 2: Verify Blogger in Google Search Console with the HTML tag
- In Search Console, choose the HTML tag method and copy the meta tag.
- In Blogger, open Theme, click the arrow next to Customize and choose Edit HTML.
- Paste the tag right after the opening <head> tag and save.
- Back in Search Console, click Verify.
If you already use Google Analytics on the blog with the same Google account, the Google Analytics verification method may also work.
Step 3: Submit your Blogger sitemap
Blogger creates a sitemap automatically. In Search Console go to Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml and submit. Blogger also offers sitemap-pages.xml for static pages.
Step 4: Check Blogger settings
- Settings > Privacy: make sure Visible to search engines is on.
- Settings > Crawlers and indexing: leave custom robots.txt off unless you know what you’re doing.
- Turn on HTTPS redirect so Google indexes one version.
What to watch in Search Console
- Pages report for indexing problems.
- Performance report for the searches that bring visitors.
- URL Inspection to test new posts.

FAQ
Why does Search Console say verification failed?
The tag may be in the wrong place or a different URL version (http vs https, www vs non-www) was added. Check both.
How long until my Blogger posts appear in Google?
Often a few days for new blogs; strong content and links help.
Do I need to resubmit the sitemap after each post?
No. Google rechecks it automatically.
