Fix WordPress “Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance” Error (2026)

“Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.” If this message is stuck on your whole WordPress site and admin, an update did not finish. It happened to us when an automatic WordPress core update froze halfway, and the site stayed down until we fixed it. The good news: it usually takes one minute. Here is how to fix briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance in WordPress in 2026.

Fix WordPress briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance

Quick answer: Connect to your site with your host’s File Manager, SFTP or SSH, open the WordPress root folder (where wp-config.php is), and delete the hidden file named .maintenance. Reload the site. If WordPress asks for a database update, click Update. Then re-run any plugin or theme update that failed.

Why this error happens

When WordPress updates itself, a plugin or a theme, it creates a temporary .maintenance file that puts the site into maintenance mode. When the update finishes, WordPress deletes it. If the update times out, runs out of memory, loses connection, or you close the page too early, the file stays behind and the site is stuck showing the message.

How to fix it

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel and open File Manager, or connect with an SFTP app like FileZilla.
  2. Go to the WordPress root folder (often public_html).
  3. Turn on Show hidden files (files starting with a dot are hidden by default).
  4. Delete the .maintenance file.
  5. Reload your site. It should be back immediately.
  6. Open the dashboard. If you see “Database Update Required”, click Update WordPress Database.

With SSH or WP-CLI: rm .maintenance in the root folder, or wp maintenance-mode deactivate.

After the fix: check the update

  • Go to Dashboard > Updates and re-run any update that is still pending.
  • If a plugin is now broken, deactivate it by renaming its folder in wp-content/plugins, then reinstall it.
  • If WordPress keeps asking for FTP details during updates, see how to fix the FTP connection information error.

How to prevent it

  • Update plugins a few at a time rather than all at once.
  • Stay on the update page until it says it is complete.
  • Make sure PHP has enough memory and execution time (ask your host).
  • Test big updates on a staging site first.
  • Use safe automatic updates for plugins and themes; WordPress can roll back a plugin automatically if an auto-update breaks the site.

Want a nicer maintenance page?

Create a maintenance.php file in wp-content with your own message and logo. WordPress shows it during updates instead of the plain default text.

FAQ

Is it safe to delete the .maintenance file?

Yes. It only contains a timestamp. Deleting it simply ends maintenance mode.

I cannot find the .maintenance file. What now?

Turn on hidden files in File Manager. If it is really not there, clear your caching plugin and CDN cache, which may still show the old message.

How long should maintenance mode last?

Usually a few seconds to a minute. WordPress ignores a .maintenance file older than 10 minutes, but clearing it is still the fastest fix.
