How to Redirect Blogger to WordPress Without Losing Traffic (2026)

How do you redirect Blogger to WordPress without losing visitors and search rankings? We started QuickOnlineTips on Blogger in 2004 and moved to WordPress on our own domain in 2006, so we’ve lived through this switch. Blogger doesn’t let you set server-side 301 redirects to another site, which makes the move tricky. Here are the methods that work in 2026, from the cleanest (keeping your URLs identical) to the workaround we used for our old blogspot address.

Redirect Blogger to WordPress

Quick answer: If your Blogger blog uses a custom domain, the best way to redirect Blogger to WordPress is not to redirect at all: import your posts into WordPress, set the WordPress permalink structure to /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html so URLs match Blogger’s, then point the domain to your new host. If you’re on a blogspot.com address, edit the Blogger theme to add a canonical link and a JavaScript redirect that sends each page to the same path on your new domain.

Step 1: Import Blogger posts into WordPress

  1. In Blogger, go to Settings > Manage blog > Back up content and download the XML file.
  2. In WordPress, go to Tools > Import > Blogger, install the Blogger Importer and upload the file. Posts, comments and categories (labels) come across.
  3. Check that images were imported. If they still load from Blogger’s servers, use a plugin that downloads external images into your media library.

Step 2: Match your old Blogger URLs

Blogger post URLs look like /2013/05/post-title.html. In WordPress, go to Settings > Permalinks, choose Custom structure and enter:

/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html

With matching URLs, every old link keeps working with no redirects needed. Read more about the trade-offs in changing WordPress permalink structures. Blogger’s label pages (/search/label/name) and archive pages won’t match, so add 301 redirects for the popular ones with a redirect plugin or .htaccess.

Step 3a: Custom domain? Point it to WordPress

If readers visit your blog at your own domain, change the domain’s DNS records from Google’s servers to your new web host, and remove the custom domain in Blogger’s settings. Google sees the same URLs on the same domain, just served by WordPress. This is the cleanest move for SEO.

Step 3b: Blogspot address? Redirect with the Blogger theme

You can’t 301 redirect a blogspot.com blog, but you can send visitors and search engines to the new site from the theme. In Blogger, open Theme > Customize > Edit HTML, back up the theme, and add this inside <head>, changing the domain:

<script>
  window.location.replace('https://www.example.com' + window.location.pathname);
</script>
<noscript><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url=https://www.example.com/"></noscript>

Because your WordPress URLs match Blogger’s paths after Step 2, /2013/05/post-title.html on blogspot lands on /2013/05/post-title.html on your domain. Also add a visible “This blog has moved” link in the theme body for anyone whose browser blocks scripts.

How we did it on QuickOnlineTips

In 2013 our blogspot posts had different URLs from our WordPress posts. We used Blogger’s old classic template tags to give each page a cross-domain canonical link and a JavaScript redirect to quickonlinetips.com/ItemNumber, then added one .htaccess 301 redirect per post from that number to the final WordPress URL:

Blogger htaccess redirect code

It worked, but it was a lot of manual work. Blogger’s classic templates are no longer the default, so if your URLs don’t match, use a redirect plugin on WordPress to map old paths to new posts instead, and test them with a 301 redirect checker.

After you redirect Blogger to WordPress

  • Add your new site to Google Search Console and submit its sitemap.
  • Update your profile links, social accounts and any links you control.
  • Keep the Blogger blog online (don’t delete it) so the redirects keep working.
  • Watch the Pages report for 404 errors and fix them with redirects.

Frequently asked questions

Can I 301 redirect Blogger to WordPress?

Not from a blogspot.com address; Blogger only offers redirects within the same blog. A JavaScript redirect plus matching URLs is the practical alternative. With a custom domain, you avoid redirects entirely by keeping the same URLs.

Will I lose Google rankings when moving from Blogger?

There’s usually a short dip. Matching URLs and redirecting every old page keeps losses small.

Should I delete my old Blogger blog?

No. Deleting it breaks the redirects and old links.

Does the Blogger Importer move images?

It imports posts and comments, but images may still point to Blogger’s servers. Move them to WordPress so they don’t break later.

  7. The above code is used to 301 redirect one file extension to another. This is useful if you just change your file extensions for your web pages and keep the same URL structure. The code in red is the file extension you want to redirect. The code in green is the domain name where the web pages are located. The code in blue is the actual file extension your redirecting to. The above code redirects all *.html requests to *.php and should be inserted into your root directories .htaccess file.

  12. of the directive, which means whether or not that directive is ALLOWED to be used inside of an .htaccess file. Htaccess files are incredibly powerful, and can also be very dangerous as some directives allowed in the main configuration files would allow users/customers to completely bypass security/bandwidth-limits/resource-limits/file-permissions, etc.. About 1/4 of all Apache directives cannot be used inside an .htaccess file (also known as a per-directory context config). The Apache Developers are well-regarded throughout the world as being among some of the best programmers, ever. To enable a disallowed directive inside a .htaccess file would require modifying the source code and re-compiling the server (which they allow and encourage if you are the owner/admin).

  22. Hey,

    Why not simple use meta refresh with 0 seconds. Most Search engines consider them a 301 redirect.

    1. That can be used only for the homepage – also it is not a good way to redirect pages from the SEO perspective.

  23. Useful Information. But why we want to switch over blogger to wordpress. Here you didn’t say about that.

    1. WordPress.org is hosted on your own domain name and hosting and gives huge growth potential and branding for your site in future.
