Google SEO Starter Guide: PDF and 2026 Version Explained

Looking for the Google SEO Starter Guide PDF? In November 2008, Google released its official Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide as a downloadable PDF, and we shared it here. That PDF has since been retired. Google now publishes the SEO Starter Guide as a web page in Google Search Central, and rewrote it in 2024 to be simpler and more practical. Here is where to find the current Google SEO Starter Guide and what it covers.

Google SEO Starter Guide

Quick answer: The official Google SEO Starter Guide is free on Google Search Central (developers.google.com/search). The old 2008 PDF link no longer works. If you want an offline copy, open the web page and use your browser’s Print > Save as PDF.

Where to find the official Google SEO Starter Guide

  1. Open the SEO Starter Guide on Google Search Central.
  2. Read it online, or press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and choose Save as PDF to keep your own copy.
  3. Explore the related Search Central docs on crawling, indexing, structured data and spam policies.

What the Google SEO Starter Guide covers in 2026

  • How Google Search works: crawling, indexing and how pages are found.
  • Helping Google find your content: sitemaps, links and checking if your site is indexed.
  • Organising your site: descriptive URLs and grouping similar pages in directories.
  • Reducing duplicate content: canonical URLs.
  • Making your site interesting and useful: helpful, reliable, people-first content.
  • Influencing title links and snippets: good title elements and meta descriptions.
  • Images and videos: high-quality images near relevant text, and descriptive alt text.
  • Promoting your website: social media, community and word of mouth.
  • Things not to focus on: myths such as meta keywords, keyword stuffing, domain name keywords, word counts and E-E-A-T as a ranking factor.

The 2008 Google SEO PDF: what it covered

The original 2008 guide from the Webmaster Tools team was a short PDF with these topics:

  • Create unique, accurate page titles
  • Make use of the description meta tag
  • Improve the structure of your URLs
  • Make your site easier to navigate
  • Offer quality content and services
  • Write better anchor text
  • Use heading tags appropriately
  • Optimise your use of images
  • Make effective use of robots.txt
  • Be aware of rel=”nofollow” for links
  • Promote your website in the right ways
  • Use free webmaster tools and web analytics

Most of this advice still holds. The big changes since 2008 are mobile-first indexing, page experience, structured data, Search Console replacing Webmaster Tools, and a much stronger focus on helpful content written for people.
