Random Team Generator: Split Names Into Fair Teams
Use this random team generator to split a list of names into fair teams in one click. Choose how many teams you want, or how many people per team, and the generator shuffles everyone and shares them out evenly. Great for classrooms, sports, quiz nights and work groups.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to or stored on our server.
Quick answer: Paste your names, choose the number of teams and click Make teams. Everyone is shuffled at random and dealt into teams that differ in size by at most one person. Click again for a new draw.
How to use the random team generator
- Type or paste names, one per line. Commas also work, and you can paste a column from a spreadsheet.
- Choose Number of teams (for example 3 teams) or People per team (for example pairs or groups of 4).
- Click Make teams. The teams appear as cards you can show on a projector.
- Click Copy teams to paste them into a chat, email or document.
Is it fair?
Yes. The list is shuffled with the Fisher-Yates method using your browser’s cryptographic random generator, so every arrangement is equally likely, and the order you typed names in makes no difference. Players are then dealt out like cards, so team sizes are as even as possible.
Ideas for using random teams
- Classrooms: mix students for group projects, debates and lab partners, so friends aren’t always together.
- Sports and PE: pick fair sides for football, basketball or relay races without the awkward picking order.
- Quiz nights and parties: split guests into trivia teams.
- Work: make breakout rooms, hackathon teams or coffee-chat pairs across departments.
- Games: board game teams, Secret Santa groups or tournament brackets.
Tips for balanced teams
Random teams are fair, but not always balanced in skill. For sports, a quick fix is to put your strongest players at the top of the list and use them as captains, then shuffle the rest. If two people must not be together, simply generate again until they are apart.
Need a single winner instead? Use the spin the wheel name picker, or decide who goes first with flip a coin.
