Play a free daily word game: find the hidden five-letter word in six tries. After each guess, the tiles change color to show which letters are right, which are in the word but in the wrong place, and which are not in the word at all. There is a new daily puzzle every day, plus an unlimited practice mode for when one game is not enough.
Quick answer: Type any five-letter word and press Enter. Green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but in a different spot, and gray means it is not in the word. Use the clues to find the answer within six guesses.
How to play the daily word game
- Choose Daily puzzle (the same word for everyone, new each day at midnight your time) or Unlimited for as many games as you like.
- Type a real five-letter word using your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter.
- Read the colors: 🟩 right letter, right spot; 🟨 right letter, wrong spot; ⬛ letter not in the word.
- Keep guessing until you find the word or use all six tries. Your stats and streak are saved in this browser.
- Press Copy result to share your color grid with friends without giving away the answer.
Best starting words
A good first guess uses five different common letters, including two or three vowels. Popular openers include SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, ADIEU (four vowels) and ROAST. On the second guess, try five new letters to rule out as many as possible.
Word guess strategy
- Use the most common letters. E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N appear in the most five-letter words.
- Don’t forget doubles. Words like APPLE, SHEEP and SPEED repeat a letter.
- Move yellow letters. A yellow letter cannot be in that spot, so try it somewhere new.
- Think about endings. Many words end in -ER, -ED, -LY, -CH or -SH.
