Quick answer: Press an arrow key (or swipe) and every tile slides as far as it can. Two tiles with the same number merge into their sum. After each move a new 2 or 4 appears. Reach the 2048 tile to win, and avoid filling the board.

How to play 2048

  1. Use the arrow keys, W A S D, the on-screen arrows, or swipe on the board.
  2. All tiles move in that direction. Matching tiles that collide merge into one tile with double the value: 2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8, and so on.
  3. Each merge adds the new tile’s value to your score. Your best score is saved in this browser.
  4. The game ends when the board is full and no tiles can merge. Made a mistake? Press Undo to take back your last move.

2048 strategy: how to win

  • Pick a corner. Keep your biggest tile in one corner, for example bottom left, and build around it.
  • Use mostly two or three directions. If your tile lives bottom left, press down and left most of the time, right when needed, and up only in an emergency.
  • Keep the edge row full. A full bottom row cannot shift sideways, so your big tile stays put.
  • Build a chain. Line up tiles in decreasing order along the edge (1024, 512, 256…) so one merge triggers the next.
  • Think before merging small tiles in the middle of the board, where they can block your chain.

2048 was created in 2014 by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli and released as open source. A typical first win takes around 1,000 moves and a score near 20,000. Experts go on to 4096 and beyond.
