Buying Expired Domain Names: Benefits, Risks and How to Do It (2026)
Thinking of buying expired domain names? Thousands of domains expire every day when owners forget to renew them, close a business or simply lose interest. Some come with years of history, real backlinks and type-in traffic, which makes them valuable for a new site, a brand, or resale. But Google’s 2024 spam policies changed the rules, so buying expired domains needs more care than it used to. Here are the real benefits, the risks, and how to buy expired domain names safely in 2026.

Quick answer: Search expired and expiring domains on sites like ExpiredDomains.net, GoDaddy Auctions, DropCatch or NameJet. Check each domain’s history in the Wayback Machine and its backlinks in a tool like Ahrefs, then buy it through a backorder or auction. Use it for a genuinely related site, not to exploit its old reputation.

How domains expire
When a domain isn’t renewed, it doesn’t become available immediately. For most .com domains:
- Expiry and grace period (up to about 45 days): the owner can still renew at the normal price, and many registrars auction the domain during this time.
- Redemption period (30 days): the owner can recover it for a higher fee.
- Pending delete (5 days): then the domain “drops” and becomes available to anyone, usually caught within seconds by drop-catching services.
Benefits of buying expired domain names
1. Existing backlinks and authority
An expired domain may still have links from news sites, blogs or universities. If your new site is on the same topic, those links can help it get discovered and crawled faster. In the old days, people also chased PageRank and DMOZ listings, but the PageRank toolbar was retired in 2016 and DMOZ closed in 2017.
2. Brandable, short and memorable names
Good short .com names are rarely available to register fresh. Expired domains are one of the few ways to get a clean, brandable name at a reasonable price.
3. Type-in traffic and resale value
Some domains still get direct visitors or have resale value. Domainers buy them to resell on marketplaces like Afternic and Sedo.
Risks: Google’s expired domain abuse policy
In March 2024 Google added expired domain abuse to its spam policies. Buying an old domain and filling it with unrelated, low-quality content to exploit its past reputation can lead to a manual action or lost rankings. For example, turning a former school or charity domain into a casino or affiliate site is exactly what it targets. Other risks:
- Toxic history: the domain may have been used for spam, malware or adult content, or have a past Google penalty.
- Trademark problems: a domain matching a brand name can be taken from you through a UDRP complaint.
- Lost link value: Google may reset signals when ownership and content change completely.
Where to find expired domain names
- ExpiredDomains.net: a free search engine of deleted and expiring domains with filters for age, backlinks and archive history.
- GoDaddy Auctions: bid on domains expiring at GoDaddy, the largest registrar.
- DropCatch and NameJet: backorder services that try to grab domains the moment they drop.
- Dynadot and Namecheap Marketplace: auctions of expiring domains at those registrars.

How to check an expired domain before you buy
- Look at its history in the Wayback Machine. Make sure it was a real site, on a topic related to yours.
- Check backlinks with Ahrefs’ free backlink checker or Semrush. Avoid domains with spammy anchor text or link farms.
- Search Google for
site:domain.comto see if anything is still indexed. - Check blacklists for spam or malware, and check for trademarks.
- After buying, verify it in Google Search Console and check for manual actions. See how to use a Google penalty checker.
Frequently asked questions
Are expired domains good for SEO in 2026?
They can help if you build a genuinely related, high-quality site. Using them just to pass link value to unrelated content breaks Google’s spam policies.
How much does an expired domain cost?
Many drop at normal registration prices, around $10–$20 a year. Backorders usually cost $20–$80, and popular names at auction can sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Can I get the old owner’s traffic?
Only some of it, such as direct visits and links. Search traffic depends on your new content.

I love Expired Domains. The Bonus you are getting from the work someone else did is just great. That’s why i created a project of my own about ED. It’s an expired domain listing website, that scans the pending delete domains, retrieves seo relevant data and publishes these information on the website. On the day of the drop it checks if the domain is still free and moves it to the deleted domains list.
It is completely free! You don’t have to pay or even register, so check it out if you like :) http://www.expireddomains.net
