PayPal India Purpose Code: Which Code to Use in 2026
Do you need a PayPal India purpose code to receive money from abroad? Yes. When we first wrote about this in March 2010, PayPal had just told Indian users to fill in a new “Purpose Code” field to withdraw money, after a long PayPal India payments fiasco. In 2026 the purpose code is still part of every Indian PayPal business account. Here is what it is, which code to choose, and how PayPal works in India today.

Quick answer: A PayPal India purpose code is an RBI code that tells banks why foreign money is coming into India, for example payment for software, consulting or advertising services. You select it in your PayPal account settings, and it must match what you are actually paid for. PayPal India now only supports receiving international (export) payments, which are converted to INR and sent to your Indian bank account.

What is a purpose code?
India’s foreign exchange rules require every inward remittance to carry a purpose code from the Reserve Bank of India’s list. The code identifies the nature of the cross-border transaction, such as export of goods, software services or advertising. It is not the same as the Importer Exporter Code (IEC) that many bloggers worried about back in 2010.
Common PayPal India purpose codes
| Code | Description | Typical users |
|---|---|---|
| P0102 | Realisation of export of goods | Online sellers shipping products abroad |
| P0802 | Software consultancy and implementation | Developers, IT freelancers |
| P0807 | Off-site software exports | Software products and SaaS |
| P0805 | News agency services | Writers and content services (the code we suggested for bloggers in 2010) |
| P1006 | Business and management consultancy and public relations | Consultants, marketers |
| P1007 | Advertising and trade fair services | Advertising, digital marketing |
Choose the code that best describes your income. If you are unsure, ask your chartered accountant, because the purpose code affects how your income is reported.
How to add a purpose code in PayPal India
- Log in to your PayPal business account.
- Open Settings (or Account Settings) and find the Purpose code section under your business information.
- Select the code that matches your products or services and save.
- Make sure your PAN, name and Indian bank account details match, because PayPal checks them before withdrawals.

PayPal India rules in 2026
- No domestic payments: since April 2021, PayPal India does not support payments between Indian users. It is only for receiving international payments.
- Automatic INR withdrawal: you cannot hold a foreign currency balance; money is converted to rupees and transferred to your linked bank account.
- Proof of receipt: PayPal provides monthly statements (FIRA) you can use as proof of foreign inward remittance for tax and export records.
- Fees: PayPal charges a transaction fee plus a currency conversion margin. Check PayPal’s fee page before quoting prices to clients.
- Personal payments: as in 2010, Indian accounts cannot receive personal “friends and family” payments; clients must pay for goods or services or pay an invoice.
What changed since 2010
In 2010, PayPal first allowed withdrawals only for export of goods and services, then added the purpose code field. Bloggers who earned advertising income worried about whether that counted as exporting a service, and about service tax on AdSense earnings. Later, PayPal made PAN, a purpose code and an Indian bank account mandatory to keep accounts active. Today these are standard steps when you open a PayPal business account in India.

Hi,
You wanted to withdraw money from your paypal account I help you.
Thanks
I think Paypal is going to lose its user base in India. Though they have to comply to RBI regulations, they have failed to manage things professionally. Bloggers in India will have little or no options to work with clients who send Payments via Paypal.
