20 Best Firefox Extensions for Power Surfing (2026 Update)
Which are the best Firefox extensions? Our first list in 2005 had 50 add-ons, from All-in-One Gestures to IE Tab and Linky. Firefox has since rebuilt its add-on system, and almost all of those old extensions stopped working in 2017. Firefox is still the best browser for power users who love extensions, especially now that it keeps supporting full ad blockers. Here are the 20 Firefox add-ons worth installing in 2026, grouped by what they do.

Quick answer: The best Firefox extensions in 2026 are uBlock Origin for blocking ads and trackers, Bitwarden for passwords, Multi-Account Containers for separating logins, Dark Reader for dark mode, Sidebery or Tree Style Tab for tab management, and SponsorBlock for YouTube. Install them only from the official Firefox Add-ons site.
Table of Contents
Privacy and security
- uBlock Origin – the most efficient ad, tracker and malware-domain blocker. Firefox still supports its full version.
- Bitwarden – free, open-source password manager that syncs everywhere.
- Firefox Multi-Account Containers – keep work, personal and shopping logins in colour-coded tabs that cannot see each other’s cookies.
- Facebook Container – isolates Facebook so it cannot follow you around the web.
- Privacy Badger – learns to block invisible trackers automatically.
- ClearURLs – strips tracking codes from links.
- Consent-O-Matic – answers cookie banners for you, choosing the most private option.
Tab management
- Sidebery – vertical tabs in a sidebar with panels and tree view. Firefox now also offers built-in vertical tabs.
- Tree Style Tab – shows tabs as a tree, so pages you open from a page stay grouped under it.
- Tab Session Manager – saves and restores whole sets of windows and tabs.
- OneTab – collapses all open tabs into a list to free memory.
Firefox now has built-in undo for closed tabs (Ctrl+Shift+T), so you no longer need the old Undo Closed Tabs extension. More tips in our guide to managing tabs in Firefox.
Reading and appearance
- Dark Reader – dark mode for every website, with brightness and contrast controls.
- Stylus – apply your own CSS styles to any site.
- Simple Translate – translate selected text or a whole page quickly.
- SingleFile – save a complete web page as a single HTML file for offline reading.
YouTube and media
- SponsorBlock – skips sponsor segments and intros in YouTube videos using community data.
- Enhancer for YouTube – control playback speed, volume and theatre mode.
- Video DownloadHelper – save videos you have the right to download.
Power user tools
- Violentmonkey – run user scripts that customise websites, the modern successor to Greasemonkey.
- Grammarly – grammar and spelling checks in every text box.
Tips for using Firefox extensions safely
- Install only from addons.mozilla.org. Look for the “Recommended” badge, which means Mozilla has reviewed the add-on.
- Check permissions. An extension that wants to “access your data for all websites” needs a good reason.
- Keep it lean. Each extension uses memory. Remove ones you have not used in a month at about:addons.
- Watch for ownership changes. Popular extensions are sometimes sold and turned into adware. Read recent reviews.
What happened to the classic Firefox extensions?
In 2017, Firefox 57 (Quantum) switched to the WebExtensions system shared with Chrome. Legacy add-ons such as All-in-One Gestures, IE Tab, Linky and Tab Mix Plus in its original form stopped working. Some returned as new versions; others were replaced by built-in Firefox features. Our older extension manager roundup shows how much has changed, and our look at popular browser toolbars covers the same story.
FAQ
Do Chrome extensions work in Firefox?
Not directly, but many developers publish the same extension for both browsers because they share the WebExtensions format.
Does Firefox still support uBlock Origin?
Yes. While Chrome moved to Manifest V3 and limited full ad blockers, Firefox continues to support the complete uBlock Origin.
Do Firefox extensions work on Android?
Yes. Firefox for Android supports a large and growing set of extensions, including uBlock Origin and Dark Reader.

Lightshot is an excellent Firefox addon, but it can’t copy to the clipboard – I believe that this is deliberately prevented by Firefox itself.
I used opera for a long time since the early versions when it had an ad banner in the menu bar +/-.
Opera had (has?) a button which changed the layout(?) of the page like background color, fonts and almost everything else like we wanted plus the integrated ones
This is really nice post works well and easy to configure…thanks for all info..
Great list – all the more so since it was initially posted in 2005 and many of the recommendations are still actively developed and continue to provide terrific functionality. I’ve been using quite a few of the ones listed, but there are a few that I think I’ll add to my ever expanding add-on bucket.
Someone mentioned FEBE as a backup tool, now Chuck Baker has released 2 great companion add-ons, CLEO that can create an XPI add-on package of all of your add-ons and OPIE that allows you to import and export your installed extension preferences so you can easily migrate them to other computers.
Some other add-ons I like:
– MinTrayR – minimize FF to tray
– Stay-Open Menu – let’s you keep drop-down menus open even after you move you mouse away
– Stop Autoplay – disable autoplay of embedded music /movies
– Ghostery – blocks 3rd party web bugs
– Daily Dilbert (speaks for itself)
– BarTab – already mentioned but a great tool
cheers
Controlling firefox tabs extensions are the coolest one…
Just an addition since you mentioned “extended status bar” as being a previous feature of opera:
“Reload Every” was an opera (exclusive) feature as well. I used opera for a long time since the early versions when it had an ad banner in the menu bar +/-.
Opera had (has?) a button which changed the layout(?) of the page like background color, fonts and almost everything else like we wanted plus the integrated ones. Was it CSS’s? It was very good for me because I could read much better but I’m so used to FF I don’t want to go there and have 2 browsers. I wish FF had something like that because I don’t know what to search for in the ad ons. Cheers!
I also recommend ietab over ieview..just my opinion guys.
Cool, I want to some functionlity in my website too here a firefox user can make this experience
I like “PageSlices addon for Firefox”. Very powerfull implementation WebSlices ideas.
Nice list, I was searching for firefox addons then I found your site…extremely useful..thanks for sharing it :)
Take a look at FoxyBay http://www.foxybay.com, if you search eBay regularly this plugin is for you.
Whenever you gets the updates of Firefox (for only browser),most of the time there is chance of incompatibility of any of your favorite add-on.
So here is simple and effective hack for this problem…

I would also recommend
WebRank Toolbar – Google Pagerank, Alexa, Compete and Quantcast Rank 1.1
A toolbar which will give you automatically website rank and pages indexed in various search engines. It is a tool for SEO and website analysis too. It includes:-
1. Google Pagerank
2. Alexa Rank
3. Compete Rank
4. Quantcast Rank
5. Pages indexed in Google
6. Pages indexed in Bing
7. Pages indexed in Yahoo
And click on each button to get more information about rank or pages indexed.
I like web to PDF converter for Firefox, allow to save web pages to PDF directly from browser.
I did not see an ad blocker – i use adblock plus
I may be silly, but i really like the “Colorful tabs” addon!
Also i recommend one called FEBE (not here though) thta can backup your addons booksmarks and such…
Firefox rules! ;D
Interesting list!
Do you know any extension that lets us open pages source codes in external apps? I’d like to open it on Notepad++, to have lines counted and highlights!
My top FF add-ons are not on this list. Check the below ones which I believe are the best.
-Abduction
-Any Color
-BabelFish
-FlagFox
-Image Assistant
-Line Marker
-Locationbar2
-McAfee SiteAdvisor
-PopUpSound
-Pronounce
-QuickPage Zoom
-Windows Update
-WOT
I found something I use , Scribefire Rocks!
Great list…
Though I have used some of the add ons you have listed. This is a huge list. Thanks a lot
I would add also :
Enables Firefox to search MSN, Yahoo and Google simultaneously via the engine
I have to mention BlueDot.
I use faves to save (one link at a time) link and post a quick note about it that I can retrieve from another computer later. Linkwad or Galleropa is for saving multiple tabs. Faves has a more active user group than mogda, yoono, etc.
ScribeFire/Performancing is excellent for research notes, but unless one has set up a blog, confined to one computter.
Once again, go visit http://faves.com/home …
last.fm is great. so is stumble upon, but I think that was in your list.
Instead of Stealther, I use Distrust. I don’t know if stealther works okay, but Distrust works very well. You click the distrust ‘eye’, and nothing get’s saved anymore, till you click it again, and then you are returned to the web site which you were visiting before (when your boss/teacher comes in xD)
FireGestures… best mouse gestures extension imho. Combined with autoHideStatusbar and Stumble, you can have a really neat fullscreen surfing experience. (You can use FireGestures to open tabs, cycle between them, close them, open Google or any webpage, save bookmarks, etc… You can even a custom script to ‘stumble’ with a single flick of the mouse!).
Nice List!
I recently wrote my own list on my blog. You missed a couple of my favorites including FireBug!!
the best extension “cookies manager”, It’s fully customizable.
TopicInsight is a new cool search helper addon. I really recommend it. Very easy to find related web pages. I mean not only similar pages, but other ones too. Even those ones you’d never find the other way. It is still in the sandbox, but I had a chance to try it. It’s actually very useful.
why can’t I download the video as I used to in firefox2? I have to copy the link to internet explorer then download the video.
I’m still looking for something that auto corrects any text I type into a text box….. Anyone?
Tree Style Tabs is a much better way to do what Separare tries to do IMHO.
Is there a plugin which auto corrects typing in the browser? like the auto correct in word.
I suggest OutWit Hub. It allows you to:
– extract data tables such as the CNN or Forbes’ rankings and export them into a pretty Excel spreadsheet,
– download tons of pictures, mangas, wallpapers,
– grab and find numerous documents of the topic you want on google or other search engine,
You can find somes reviews at
Cheers,
This is my list of favourite Firefox add ons:
