5 Best Mac Antivirus Programs in 2026 (and Do You Need One?)
Looking for the best Mac antivirus? Do Macs even need antivirus? For years many Mac owners believed Macs could not get viruses. That was never quite true, and in 2026 Mac malware, adware and info-stealers are common, often hidden in pirated apps, fake updates and browser extensions. macOS has strong built-in protection, but many users add a second layer. Here are the best Mac antivirus programs and how to decide if you need one.

Quick answer: macOS includes XProtect, Gatekeeper and automatic malware removal, which is enough for careful users who keep macOS updated and install apps only from the App Store or trusted developers. For extra protection, the best Mac antivirus programs are Malwarebytes for Mac, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Norton 360 for Mac and the free Avast Security for Mac.
Table of Contents
Built-in Mac security
- XProtect: Apple’s built-in malware scanner checks apps when they open and runs regular background scans with silent signature updates.
- Gatekeeper and notarization: blocks apps that are not signed and checked by Apple unless you override it.
- System Integrity Protection: stops malware from changing core system files.
- Safari safe browsing: warns about known phishing and malware sites.
Best Mac antivirus programs in 2026
- Malwarebytes for Mac: excellent at removing adware and unwanted programs. The free version scans and cleans on demand; Premium adds real-time protection.
- Intego Mac Internet Security X9: built only for Macs, with VirusBarrier antivirus and NetBarrier firewall.
- Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac: very high detection rates in independent tests, light on resources, with ransomware protection.
- Norton 360 for Mac: antivirus plus VPN, password manager and identity monitoring in one subscription.
- Avast Security for Mac: a free option with real-time scanning and web protection.
Who should use a Mac antivirus?
- People who download apps from outside the App Store.
- Families sharing one Mac, especially with children.
- Businesses that must meet security rules.
- Anyone who often shares files with Windows users. A Mac antivirus also catches Windows malware so you do not pass it on.
How to keep your Mac safe without extra software
- Install macOS updates promptly (System Settings > General > Software Update).
- Download apps only from the Mac App Store or the developer’s official site.
- Never install “Flash Player” or “video codec” pop-ups, which are classic malware tricks.
- Review browser extensions and remove ones you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID and email. See how to secure your Google account.
- Check suspicious files with VirusTotal before opening them.
Signs your Mac may be infected
- Your browser home page or search engine changes on its own.
- Lots of pop-up ads or redirects.
- Unknown apps or profiles in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles.
- The Mac suddenly runs hot and slow.

Hi, I agree with you … And IMO laptops now days have all the features provided by a standard desktop computer like keyboard, display, a pointing device (functions like mouse) and speakers. Laptops are powered by a rechargeable battery that can last up to a few hours. Personally… I have a HP Pavilion dv600, I like it since it was my first laptop :D but I’m thinking now to buy something better since its became old now… I’m not sure what it’s better, But maybe I’ll search for a Toshiba since I can’t buy a Mac :( it’s too expensive!! So what is your advice please?
This “article” is a joke! The first two “best” av apps mentioned have long been discontinued… one back in 1999 and only ran on OS 8!!! (Macs have been running a little thing called OS X, which is a completely different architecture, for over a decade!) That you are publishing this over 10 years too late is ridiculous and shows that you are completely clueless. The software you mentioned can’t even run on Macs anymore!
Virus Barrier X5 is pretty darn cool and I don’t think this list would be complete without Virus Barrier X5.
Yeah, I concur, Intego’s product is by far the best.
thanks…its free?
I remember, recently kaspersky also launched anti virus for MAC.
your review is completely off the line for Agax & Clamcour and you have forgotten intego virusbarrier X5
thanks
