Tally ERP 9 Free Activation in 2026: Use TallyPrime Free (Educational Mode) and Upgrade Guide
Looking to activate a free copy of Tally ERP 9? Our 2010 guide explained a limited-time promotional licence, but that offer ended long ago, and Tally ERP 9 has since been replaced by TallyPrime. Here’s what you can legally use for free in 2026, how activation works now, and what Tally ERP 9 users should do next.
Quick answer: There’s no longer a free full Tally ERP 9 licence. You can download TallyPrime free from Tally Solutions and use it in Educational mode for learning, with no time limit. For real business use you need a paid licence (Silver or Gold, bought or rented). Existing Tally ERP 9 users with valid support can upgrade to TallyPrime free.

Is Tally ERP 9 still available?
Tally ERP 9 was replaced by TallyPrime in November 2020. Tally says existing ERP 9 installations will keep working, but new licences are sold only for TallyPrime, and renewal of ERP 9’s Tally Software Services (TSS) ended in August 2026. Without TSS, ERP 9 users don’t get updates, GST changes or online services like e-invoicing support.
Use TallyPrime free in Educational mode
TallyPrime has a free Educational mode designed for students and anyone learning accounting:
- Download TallyPrime from the official Tally Solutions website.
- Run the installer and follow the setup wizard.
- When TallyPrime opens and asks about a licence, choose Work in Educational Mode.
Educational mode includes almost all features, including GST, inventory, payroll and reports. The catch is that you can only record vouchers on a few dates in each month, typically the 1st, the 2nd and the last day, so it’s fine for practice but not for running a business.
How to activate a paid TallyPrime licence
Activation in TallyPrime is much simpler than the old ERP 9 process with promotional codes and unlock keys:
- Buy a licence from Tally or an authorised Tally partner. You’ll get a serial number and activation key by email.
- Open TallyPrime and choose Activate New License.
- Enter the serial number, activation key and the administrator email ID used for the purchase.
- Enter the unlock key sent to that email to complete activation. Your PC needs to be online.
Tally sells a single-user Silver licence and a multi-user Gold licence, as a one-time purchase or as a monthly or yearly rental. Prices change with offers, so check the current rates on Tally’s website or with a partner.
Upgrading from Tally ERP 9 to TallyPrime
- Free upgrade: ERP 9 users whose TSS was valid on or after 9 November 2020 can upgrade to TallyPrime at no extra cost.
- Paid upgrade: if your TSS lapsed before that date, Tally offers discounted upgrade plans.
- Your data: TallyPrime includes a migration tool that converts your ERP 9 company data. Take a full backup first.
Avoid “free Tally crack” downloads
Websites offering cracked or “free activated” Tally ERP 9 or TallyPrime are illegal and risky. Cracked copies often carry malware, can corrupt your accounts data, and won’t get GST updates. That’s a real problem when your books must match the government’s GST portal. Educational mode is the safe, legal way to use Tally for free.

I have activated & worked for 3 months but after 3 months it has been converted into educational & then after I had formatted the harddisk i.e C:\ drive and again using but not working saying in message that you cannot use rental serial number on this machine.

Hi i have done as you said, but bymistakely i typed in wrong email add, after which error code is coming as you said. I un-installed the program downloaded a new one from tally website and then did the same thing but still error shows, liscense is already activated. Kindly help on urgent basis how do I do it. OR else is it possible to use tally.erp 3.1 in any tally 9 lower verision.

i have done the process, and it is valid till dt. 01-08-10, but i can enter voucher in advance that is today 03-05-10, for voucher date 15-08-10 or any after date 01-08-10.

Actually I was getting problems in Tally.ERP 9, the problem is having problem of vat report, service tax report ,tds report, excise for manufacturer reports, also there are connectivity issue for .net user , there are many issue remain same which tally ignore from years like after split the company you cannot reconcile last year chq, and also i want a solutions for this problem also like i sold a laptop to a customer but customer want to upgrade the ram of laptop so i make a credit note for that customer and select sale bill during credit note entry, now customer ledger is showing right balance but stock qty showing 1pcs with zero value”
