Can Your Readers Contact You? 8 Checks for a Working Contact Form

When did you last check that your contact form actually works? Contact forms keep your email address away from spambots while letting readers reach you, but they break silently. A theme update, a plugin conflict or an email setting can mean messages vanish for months, and you’ll simply think nobody is writing. We first wrote this after hitting broken forms on other blogs, and rebuilt our own contact form in 2026. Here’s a quick checklist to make sure your contact form works every time.

Check your contact form is working

Quick answer: Send yourself a test message every month and after every theme or plugin update. Use a reliable form plugin, send its emails through an SMTP or email service (not PHP mail) so they don’t land in spam, keep required fields to a minimum, use invisible spam protection such as Cloudflare Turnstile or Akismet, store entries in your dashboard as a backup, and link your contact page clearly from every page.

Why contact forms fail

  • Emails go to spam or never send: many hosts block or flag WordPress’s default PHP mail.
  • Theme or plugin updates break the form or its scripts.
  • Over-strict validation rejects valid email addresses or phone numbers.
  • Aggressive CAPTCHAs stop real people, not just bots.
  • The notification address is old, full or forwards nowhere.
  • Broken links to the contact page after a menu change.

8-point contact form checklist

  1. Test it yourself: submit the form from a phone and a desktop, with a normal address, and check the email arrives within minutes.
  2. Use SMTP: an SMTP plugin such as WP Mail SMTP sends form emails through your email provider or a service like Brevo or Amazon SES, with proper SPF and DKIM, so they reach your inbox.
  3. Save entries: choose a form plugin that stores submissions in WordPress, so nothing is lost if an email fails.
  4. Ask for less: name, email and message are usually enough. Mark required fields clearly; don’t require phone or country unless you need them.
  5. Use friendly spam protection: invisible checks like Cloudflare Turnstile, honeypots or Akismet instead of hard-to-read CAPTCHAs. See the best plugins to stop comment spam, many of which protect forms too.
  6. Show a clear confirmation after sending, and consider an auto-reply so people know it worked.
  7. Check the link: make sure “Contact” is in your header or footer menu and the page loads without errors.
  8. Offer an alternative: an email address written in a spam-resistant way or a social profile, in case the form fails.

Popular contact form plugins

  • Contact Form 7: free and flexible; add Flamingo to store messages.
  • WPForms: drag-and-drop builder with a free Lite version.
  • Theme or block forms: Kadence Blocks, Jetpack and others include simple contact form blocks.

Protecting your inbox matters too: here’s how to protect your email address on your website.

Feedback is valuable

When a reader takes time to send a suggestion, bug report or even criticism, make sure it reaches you the first time. People rarely type a message twice.

FAQ

Why am I not receiving contact form emails in WordPress?

Usually because the server’s PHP mail is blocked or marked as spam. Install an SMTP plugin and authenticate your sending domain.

How often should I test my contact form?

Monthly, and after every theme, plugin or hosting change.

Is a contact form better than showing my email?

A form reduces spam and collects the details you need. Offering both is friendliest for readers.
