AVG Free Antivirus Download: What You Get in 2026

Want an AVG free antivirus download? We first covered AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.5 in 2009, when it added anti-spyware to its engine and ran on Windows 2000, XP and Vista. AVG is still one of the most popular free antivirus programs in 2026, now called AVG AntiVirus Free and owned by Gen Digital, the company behind Norton and Avast. Here is how to download it safely, what the free version includes, and when you might want something else.

AVG free antivirus download guide

Quick answer: Download AVG AntiVirus Free from the official AVG website (avg.com). It is free for personal use on Windows, Mac and Android, with real-time protection against viruses, ransomware and malicious websites. During setup, untick any extra offers you do not want, such as browser or VPN trials.

How to download AVG free antivirus safely

  1. Go to AVG and choose AVG AntiVirus Free for your device.
  2. Run the installer. Pick Customize rather than Install to see what will be added.
  3. Untick optional extras like AVG Secure Browser or trial offers if you do not want them.
  4. Let AVG update its definitions, then run a first full scan.
  5. Uninstall any other real-time antivirus first; two at once slows your PC and can cause conflicts.

Avoid “AVG free full version” downloads on third-party sites. They are often outdated or bundled with adware.

What AVG AntiVirus Free includes

  • Real-time scanning of files and programs as they run.
  • Web and email protection that blocks dangerous downloads, links and attachments.
  • Ransomware and malware protection through behaviour monitoring.
  • Automatic updates of the virus database and program.

What the free version does not include

As in 2009, some features remain for paying customers only. AVG Internet Security adds an enhanced firewall, extra protection for sensitive files and webcams, fake website protection for banking, and priority support. The free version also shows occasional upgrade prompts. AVG Free is licensed for personal, non-commercial use; businesses need AVG’s business products.

AVG Free vs other free antivirus

AntivirusPlatformsNotes
AVG AntiVirus FreeWindows, Mac, AndroidSimple interface, some upgrade prompts
Avast Free AntivirusWindows, Mac, AndroidSame engine as AVG, more extra tools
Microsoft DefenderWindows (built in)No install, no ads, strong test results
Bitdefender Antivirus FreeWindowsLightweight, few settings

Many Windows users find Microsoft Defender is enough. AVG makes sense if you want a familiar interface, protection across Windows, Mac and Android, or you prefer a third-party product. For a quick second opinion on an infected PC, try the free McAfee Stinger scanner, and see your Norton free trial options if you want a paid suite.

Is AVG free antivirus safe?

AVG’s malware detection performs well in independent lab tests. In 2024, the US Federal Trade Commission took action against Avast, AVG’s sister company, over the sale of browsing data collected through its browser extensions. Avast agreed to stop selling that data. If privacy matters to you, review AVG’s privacy settings during setup and turn off optional data sharing.

How to uninstall AVG cleanly

If you decide AVG is not for you, open Windows Settings, then Apps, find AVG AntiVirus and choose Uninstall. If the normal uninstaller fails or leaves pieces behind, AVG offers a free AVG Clear removal tool on its support site that removes all remaining files and settings. Restart the PC afterwards and check that Microsoft Defender has switched itself back on under Windows Security, so you are never left without real-time protection.

FAQ

Is AVG really free?

Yes. AVG AntiVirus Free costs nothing for personal use and never expires. Paid plans add extra features.

Does AVG work on Windows 11?

Yes. Current versions support Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Do I need AVG if I have Windows Defender?

Not necessarily. Defender provides solid protection on its own. Use one real-time antivirus, not both.

  8. AVG 8 is a very good anti virus package, however there is a few little problems with the default setup.

When you install the Link Scanner it adds a little plugin into your web browser, when you visit search engines such as google it scans through each and every result which can cause your browsing experience to be painfully slow!

I have actually written a little article on how to install AVG8 with out the Link Scanner.

  10. It’s an incredible resource hog, consuming 20% to 30% of CPU cycles at idle. When I load my programming software IDE, CPU load jumps and stays 100%.

    It’s junk.

    regards

  12. I have been using Free AVG and I have downloaded
8.0 at least 3 times, but I still get notices
that I must update 7.5 to 8.0 by July 25.

Do I need to remove any or all of the 7 versions that show up on my desktop? Help, please!
    Thanks

  13. my freinds have suggested me the best working antivirus free software to download. it really works good.

  14. it is too easy to use and it takes very less time to be updated. most of people are using it so it is so popular.

that’s why i am interested in using it.

  15. AVG version 8 has my cpu running at 100% most of the time and I’m not the only one. It’s good but a real resource hog that slows me down big time. Only upgraded because the nag screen said there would be no more updates available for 7.5 after May. Lots of people are saying the same and AVG needs to look into this problem. Upgrade with caution if you have an older pc…

  16. FORGET V8.x, do NOT upgrade!!!!
I loved AVG up to V7.5, but the new one is crap. A giant resource hog, that will bring slow computers to a halt. Best to be avoided!

  17. Just as I wouldn’t purchase security equipment from a store that is constantly being burgled, you have to wonder about an anti-virus site that stays offline for days on end.
