How to Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly for Free (2026)

How do you create a mobile site for free? In 2008 we used a service called MoFuse to build a separate mobile version of QuickOnlineTips at m.quickonlinetips.com, with an extra iPhone version. MoFuse has closed, and separate “m.” sites are now a thing of the past. Today one responsive site adapts to every screen, and most visitors arrive on phones. Here’s how to get a mobile-friendly site for free in 2026.

Make your site mobile-friendly

Quick answer: Use a responsive theme or site builder, so the same pages fit phones, tablets and desktops. On WordPress, switch to a free responsive theme such as Twenty Twenty-Five, Kadence, GeneratePress or Astra. Make sure the viewport meta tag is present, text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap and pages load fast. Test with your own phone and PageSpeed Insights.

Why separate mobile sites are outdated

  • Google uses mobile-first indexing: it ranks your site based on its mobile version, so a cut-down m. site can hurt SEO.
  • Two sites mean double the work and frequent mismatches.
  • Redirects slow visitors down and break shared links.

If you still have an old m. subdomain, 301-redirect each m. URL to the matching main URL.

How to make your site mobile-friendly for free

1. Use a responsive theme

All modern WordPress default themes and popular free themes are responsive. Blogger, WordPress.com, Wix and other builders also make every site responsive automatically. QuickOnlineTips uses the Kadence theme.

2. Check the viewport tag

Your page’s <head> should include <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">. Responsive themes add it for you.

3. Make text and buttons easy to use

  • Body text at least 16px.
  • Tap targets (buttons, menu items) at least about 48 pixels high with space between them.
  • No horizontal scrolling; wide tables and code should scroll inside their own box.

4. Keep it fast

Phones on mobile data are slower. Compress images, lazy load them and use caching. See our guide to optimizing images.

5. Avoid intrusive pop-ups

Full-screen pop-ups that cover content on mobile annoy users and can hurt rankings. Use small banners instead.

6. Test it

  • Open your site on your own phone and a friend’s.
  • In Chrome or Edge, press F12 and use the device toolbar to preview different screen sizes.
  • Run PageSpeed Insights for mobile speed and usability issues. Google retired its separate Mobile-Friendly Test tool in 2023.

Going further

  • Progressive Web App (PWA): lets visitors add your site to their home screen like an app; plugins can add this to WordPress.
  • Dark mode support for readers who prefer it.
  • Mobile menus that are simple, with search easy to reach.

FAQ

What is a mobile-friendly website?

A site that’s easy to read and use on a phone without zooming or sideways scrolling, and that loads quickly.

Do I need a separate mobile site?

No. A single responsive site is the recommended approach for users and SEO.

Is AMP still needed?

No. Google no longer requires AMP for Top Stories, and a fast responsive site is enough.
