20 Best Firefox Extensions for Power Surfing (2026 Update)

Which are the best Firefox extensions? Our first list in 2005 had 50 add-ons, from All-in-One Gestures to IE Tab and Linky. Firefox has since rebuilt its add-on system, and almost all of those old extensions stopped working in 2017. Firefox is still the best browser for power users who love extensions, especially now that it keeps supporting full ad blockers. Here are the 20 Firefox add-ons worth installing in 2026, grouped by what they do.

Best Firefox extensions for power surfing

Quick answer: The best Firefox extensions in 2026 are uBlock Origin for blocking ads and trackers, Bitwarden for passwords, Multi-Account Containers for separating logins, Dark Reader for dark mode, Sidebery or Tree Style Tab for tab management, and SponsorBlock for YouTube. Install them only from the official Firefox Add-ons site.

Privacy and security

  • uBlock Origin – the most efficient ad, tracker and malware-domain blocker. Firefox still supports its full version.
  • Bitwarden – free, open-source password manager that syncs everywhere.
  • Firefox Multi-Account Containers – keep work, personal and shopping logins in colour-coded tabs that cannot see each other’s cookies.
  • Facebook Container – isolates Facebook so it cannot follow you around the web.
  • Privacy Badger – learns to block invisible trackers automatically.
  • ClearURLs – strips tracking codes from links.
  • Consent-O-Matic – answers cookie banners for you, choosing the most private option.

Tab management

  • Sidebery – vertical tabs in a sidebar with panels and tree view. Firefox now also offers built-in vertical tabs.
  • Tree Style Tab – shows tabs as a tree, so pages you open from a page stay grouped under it.
  • Tab Session Manager – saves and restores whole sets of windows and tabs.
  • OneTab – collapses all open tabs into a list to free memory.

Firefox now has built-in undo for closed tabs (Ctrl+Shift+T), so you no longer need the old Undo Closed Tabs extension. More tips in our guide to managing tabs in Firefox.

Reading and appearance

  • Dark Reader – dark mode for every website, with brightness and contrast controls.
  • Stylus – apply your own CSS styles to any site.
  • Simple Translate – translate selected text or a whole page quickly.
  • SingleFile – save a complete web page as a single HTML file for offline reading.

YouTube and media

Power user tools

  • Violentmonkey – run user scripts that customise websites, the modern successor to Greasemonkey.
  • Grammarly – grammar and spelling checks in every text box.

Tips for using Firefox extensions safely

  • Install only from addons.mozilla.org. Look for the “Recommended” badge, which means Mozilla has reviewed the add-on.
  • Check permissions. An extension that wants to “access your data for all websites” needs a good reason.
  • Keep it lean. Each extension uses memory. Remove ones you have not used in a month at about:addons.
  • Watch for ownership changes. Popular extensions are sometimes sold and turned into adware. Read recent reviews.

What happened to the classic Firefox extensions?

In 2017, Firefox 57 (Quantum) switched to the WebExtensions system shared with Chrome. Legacy add-ons such as All-in-One Gestures, IE Tab, Linky and Tab Mix Plus in its original form stopped working. Some returned as new versions; others were replaced by built-in Firefox features. Our older extension manager roundup shows how much has changed, and our look at popular browser toolbars covers the same story.

FAQ

Do Chrome extensions work in Firefox?

Not directly, but many developers publish the same extension for both browsers because they share the WebExtensions format.

Does Firefox still support uBlock Origin?

Yes. While Chrome moved to Manifest V3 and limited full ad blockers, Firefox continues to support the complete uBlock Origin.

Do Firefox extensions work on Android?

Yes. Firefox for Android supports a large and growing set of extensions, including uBlock Origin and Dark Reader.

  1. As a web developer my best friends are
    Web Developer
    CSS Viewer
    Aardvark
    CheckPage links

    etc …

  2. I miss Foxy Voice, which doesn’t work for FF 1.5. Does anyone know of another FF text-to-speech extension? Thanks!

  3. Thanks for taking time to compile a very useful list.

You should definetly add permaTabs to the “control firefox tabs” section.

  4. Fun list, thanks. I’ve got several of these excellent extensions and I must say that my supercharged Firefox is one of my most important productivity tools! I’d add the new coComment extension to this growing list. Helps me keep great track of my blog comments.

  5. In the ‘Control your Bookmarks’ category I would add Jeteye. Finally a way to easily group links and images in a taggable and searchable way. I’m totally hooked!

  6. I’ll suggest TimeTracker, to keep track of time using Firefox.
It should go in the “Control myself” category :)

  7. Would like to add cookiepie, a recently added extension.
    It can be downloaded here
Now is easier to open different gmail accounts on each firefox tab.

  8. Best screen capture extension (Firefox 1.5, no Java): Pearl Crescent Page Saver
    https://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/

Best search engine ordering extension: Search Engine Ordering
    https://maltekraus.de//Firefox/Search-Engine-Ordering/?lang=en

Best crash recovery extension: Crash Recovery

Best automatic currency conversion extension: ViewMyCurrency
    https://viewmycurrency.wordpress.com/

  9. I am surprised in a “constantly updated” site, that gmail delete button is still listed as it has been included in Gmail for some months. So this extension now only creates a redundant Delete button.

  10. Firefox Showcase, one of the extendfirefox contest finalists. Better than foxPose and Separe and from my point of view even better for navigating through Tabs and Windows than Reveal.

  11. Excellent find on the Forecastfox Enhanced. I love the ability to pick a URL for the radar image. Ive never liked the Accuweather radar images. Now I can pick my local news station to get the image, I can pick the display size of the image and animate it.

Great find and great work on the part of the author.

  12. i found a very cool extension for filtering web sites it’s called ProCon, you can find it in the firefox extension site

  13. ScreenGrab should only be recommenced for Firefox 1.0.x users who have Java installed.

Firefox 1.5 users should use Pearl Crescent Page Saver instead.
It uses the brand new Canvas feature instead of Java to save the viewable portion or the whole page with one mouse click.
Additionally you can use “firefox -savepng https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/” to save a screenshot from the command line.
    Pearl Crescent Page Saver works like a charm and is localized in cs-CZ, de-DE, en-US, es-ES, fr-FR, it-IT, ru-RU, sk-SK and sl-SI.

  14. first of all, the tabbrowser preference is broken. you can’t middle click the bookmark into a new tab anymore. i’ve emailed the author and he doesn’t respond. this only applies on brand NEW installs of FF1.5.

secondly, many users still rely on the ‘favorites’ folder for all their bookmarks and thus far, there hasn’t been a bookmark extension uses the fav folder like IE does. it should be fairly simple to write, if i only had the time! i’d hate to synchronize it everytime i add/remove a bookmark! the closest one is syncmark but 1.5 broke compatibility. i was using it for a while.

  15. This tool enables you to add a custom search engine to Firefox with one click. You can include 1-25 sites.

    Mozilla Firefox Custom Search Engine.

  16. Tab X isn’t necessary with the existance of Tab Mix Plus, as TMP allows the addition of the X to each tab, while also removing it from the main Tab Bar.

I have my ‘X’ set to appear only upon rollover.

  17. Tab Browser Extensions
    https://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/tabextensions/index.html.en

This extension will do what tabbrowser preferences, tab mix plus, unclosetab, tab x, and duplicate tab all do, plus alot more.

I never understood why this is not on the mozilla site…it it one of my favorite extensions. Check it out.

Nice list…keep up the good work!

  18. Folks !

What about Save Page As ?

I gonna nutz searching good or serviceable extension for Firefox 1.5.

    Nothing works.

One works but bunks midway. When you copy web page or it’s text, the Save Page As tab doesn’t

work when u right click to use it.

Don’t tell me Scrapbook or Slogger or Toolbar Enhancements. My great FF was dead the next

    minute with these.

I had to scratch it and reinstall back to life.

The whole / holy FF 1.5 community including it’s fathers who had gone bonkers about this great

browser seem to have forgotten about simplifying SAVE PAGE AS.

Everybody saves. I save. You save and the globe saves.

    Any wonder boy here ? ? ?

  20. Groowe toolbar firefox extension, has them all ,Yahoo,Google,Dogpile, etc. you name it,it has it..

  21. Great list. Here’s my contribution:

X-Ray | Displays the HTML tags around the content on a webpage, letting you see how the document was constructed without having to go back and forth between the sourcecode and the rendered page in your browser.

    :-)

  22. browster.com – IE/Firefox-plugin software allows pop-up previews of webpages, and helps in browsing and loading pages faster.

  23. I just wish they’d fix the Search Web rightclick so that it actually worked right… putting quotes around the selected text so every phrase you search for doesn’t put half the Internet in the results, and every name you search for doesn’t grab every geneology page.

As far as additional addons go… that long unused blue bar at the top would make a dandy place to put a newsticker, like on the bottom of the screen at FoxNews.

I never ever want to open a link in a new window, I wish I knew how to drop that option out of the rightclick list…

  24. For most people, Platypus (platypus.mozdev.org) is a useful adjunct to Greasemonkey.

  25. You might want to change your link from Adblock to Adblock Plus. Adblock is no longer updated and is completely useless on the new versions of Firefox, afaik.

  26. i love the new performancing for firefox extension. it makes blogging while switching between tags so easy….. i also love the Sage RSS feed reader extension.

  27. y would u install, load and use 4 different extensions if Tabbrowser Extension does all of them for you?

  28. FilterG is great but it too powerful, can cause you not to see some of the image that website have it own that are not ads

  29. I’d like to recommend MR Tech’s Local install in place of Restart Firefox. It has the “Restart Firefox” functionality, plus other functions to help manage extensions (such as alphabetical sorting of the extensions list, ability to override compatibility checking, auto-generation of plain text or HTML lists of installed extensions, etc.). Really a very nice piece of work.

  30. Don’t forget conQuery. Adds your search engines to the context menu when a word is selected.

And menu editor. It allows complete customation of Firefox’s menus.

  31. From the same person who brought Disable Target For Downloads, Context Search is another must-have tool for me, and should be for anyone who frequently uses the Mycroft search services.

  32. You forgot one, well strictly not an extension but a plugin non the less : http://www.igloader.com/

  33. Colorzilla
    MeasureIt
    EditCSS
all can be found on the mozilla site. They’re good for developers. Also I like OpenNewWindowFromHere

  34. Let me be the first to say THANK YOU! Many very useful things here. Question: These DO add to the boot up time of Firefox, am I right? Takes up more system resources?

  35. If you want to format a webpage for printing, you can remove clutter by using these two extensions – Nuke Anything Enhanced and Aardvark. Also, similiar to Paste and Go is Fetch URL. Xinha is WYSIWYG editor for commenting in blogs (its the tool I’m using to post this comment). Also, for bloggers is Performancing for Firefox, a full featured blog editor. Rounding off, I would like to add QuickNote, an extension that adds Opera’s Notes feature.

  36. I was using bookmarks syncronizer for a bit, but had troubles with it. Then I found FoxMarks (in beta) which gives me access to all my bookmarks in the same structure as my menus, and should (I haven’t tested this yet) sync my PC at work to match.

  37. The first extension I always install is PasswordMaker from http://www.passwordmaker.org — it is a password generating extension that generates a different password for each web site you visit (based on a single master password) so you no longer really care if some web site has lax security and a hacker steals its password database.

  38. Great post!

I’ve installed a few extensions from your listing.. some of which I never knew existed! :)

  39. Here are a few extensions I recommend (copied from my own list of extensions that I find useful):

I like Add Bookmark Here, which adds an similarly titled menu item to every submenu in the Bookmarks menu enabling easy bookmarking in any folder.

Then there’s Uppity, which adds an “Up” toolbar button that can be added to the navigation toolbar (and optionally the status bar, too), and makes navigating up a website’s directory structure as easy as clicking the button or pressing Alt-Up (Option-Up on Macs).

Finally, Tabs Menu adds, appropriately enough, a Tabs menu to Firefox’s main menu bar. This simple feature makes navigating the current window’s open tabs much, much easier.

  40. I’d recommend the Perfomancing extension for blog posting, and the Xinha Here! for adding WYSIWYG editing to any web form.
