Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office: What Happened and What to Use Now
Google Cloud Connect was a free Google plugin that brought cloud syncing and real-time collaboration to Microsoft Office on Windows. This article explains what it did, why Google retired it, and how to work with Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in Google Drive today.

Quick answer: Google Cloud Connect can no longer be downloaded. Google stopped it on April 30, 2013, and recommended Google Drive on the desktop instead. Today you can sync Office files with Google Drive for desktop, or open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files directly in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

What Was Google Cloud Connect?
When we covered it in 2011, Google Cloud Connect was a free plugin that added Google cloud features to Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 on Windows PCs. It worked inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint and added:
- Cloud sync and backup of your Office documents to your Google account
- Simultaneous editing so several people could work on the same file
- Revision history to see and restore earlier versions
- A unique URL for each document and simple sharing
It ran on Windows XP (with .NET Framework 2.0), Windows Vista and Windows 7. It was a clever bridge for teams who loved Microsoft Office but wanted the sharing benefits of Google Docs. Businesses could also try it through Google’s 90-day Appsperience program, which bundled Google Docs, Google Sites and Cloud Connect with support from Google experts.
Why Google Cloud Connect Was Discontinued
In March 2013 Google announced on its Workspace Updates blog that Cloud Connect would stop working for existing users on April 30, 2013. Google said that installing Google Drive on the desktop achieved the same thing more effectively, and that Drive also worked on Mac, Android and iOS, not just Windows.
Google Cloud Connect Alternatives in 2026
These are the ways to get the same benefits today:
- Google Drive for desktop: syncs files between your computer and Google Drive, so your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are backed up and available on every device.
- Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: open Office files from Google Drive and edit them in your browser, then share and edit together in real time with full version history.
- Microsoft 365: if your team prefers Office, save files to OneDrive or SharePoint and co-author them in the Office apps or Office on the web.
How to Edit Office Files in Google Drive
- Upload the Word, Excel or PowerPoint file to Google Drive, or let Google Drive for desktop sync it.
- Double-click the file in Drive to open it in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides.
- Edit it and use the Share button to invite others to edit together.
- When you need a Microsoft Office file again, choose File, then Download, and pick the Office format.
Some advanced Office features, such as macros, are not supported in Google’s editors, so test complex spreadsheets before switching a whole team. Google’s help page on working with Office files lists what is supported. If you keep sensitive documents in Word, also see how to password protect a Word document, and protect your Google account with 2-step verification.
