How to Verify WordPress Site in Google Search Console (4 Ways, 2026)

In April 2011 Google released an official Site Verification plugin for WordPress, making it easier to prove ownership in Google Webmaster Tools. That plugin is long gone and Webmaster Tools is now Google Search Console, but there are even simpler ways to verify WordPress site in Google Search Console today. Here are four.

Verify WordPress site in Google Search Console

Quick answer: The easiest way is Google’s free Site Kit plugin: install it, sign in with Google and it verifies your site and connects Search Console automatically. Alternatively, copy the HTML tag code from Search Console into your SEO plugin’s verification field (Rank Math, Yoast or AIOSEO), or add a DNS TXT record at your domain registrar to verify a Domain property.

Method 1: Site Kit by Google

  1. Install and activate Site Kit by Google.
  2. Click Start setup and sign in with your Google account.
  3. Grant permissions; Site Kit verifies the site and adds the Search Console property.

Method 2: SEO plugin verification field

  1. In Search Console, add a URL prefix property and choose HTML tag.
  2. Copy only the content code from the meta tag.
  3. Paste it in Rank Math > General Settings > Webmaster Tools, Yoast SEO > Settings > Site connections or AIOSEO’s Webmaster Tools tab.
  4. Save, then click Verify in Search Console.

Method 3: DNS TXT record (best)

A Domain property covers http, https, www and every subdomain. Add the TXT record Search Console gives you at your registrar or DNS host. See how to verify all subdomains with DNS TXT.

Method 4: HTML file upload

Download the verification file and upload it to your WordPress root folder with your host’s file manager or FTP. Don’t delete it later, or verification will be lost.

After verifying

  • Submit your sitemap (Rank Math and Yoast create one at /sitemap_index.xml).
  • Check the Pages report for indexing issues.
  • Add other owners or users under Settings > Users and permissions.
  • Using Bing too? Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, which can import from Search Console.

FAQ

Which verification method should I choose?

DNS is the most robust. Site Kit is the easiest if you prefer a plugin.

Why did my verification stop working?

Changing themes, SEO plugins or removing the file can drop the tag. Re-add it and verify again.

Do I need Search Console for WordPress?

It’s free and shows how Google sees your site, so every site owner should use it.

  4. instead of Google Webmaster, there are some third party that requires Meta verification, such as MyBlogLog, Blogcatalog, etc.

so i prefer to use Easy Meta for better meta management ^_^
