Best Dropbox WordPress Plugins for Backups & Files (2026)
What are the best Dropbox WordPress plugins in 2026? When we first made this list in 2011, people used Dropbox as a free CDN and to sync images. Most of those early plugins are gone, and Dropbox’s Public folder stopped serving files years ago. Today, Dropbox WordPress plugins are mainly used for two jobs: sending automatic backups to Dropbox, and letting you or your visitors share and upload files.

Quick answer: For backups, the best free Dropbox WordPress plugins are UpdraftPlus, WPvivid and BackWPup, which can all save scheduled backups of your files and database to Dropbox. For embedding Dropbox files or collecting uploads, use a dedicated file plugin or a form plugin with a Dropbox add-on.

What happened to the 2011 Dropbox plugins?
Our original list included Dropbox CDN, WordPress Backup to Dropbox, Dropbox Sync, Pressbox and Dropbox Upload Form. These plugins were not kept up to date and are no longer available or safe to use. The Dropbox CDN idea also stopped working when Dropbox ended the Public folder’s ability to serve website files. Today, use a real CDN or your host’s caching for speed, and keep Dropbox for backups and file sharing.
Tips for choosing a Dropbox WordPress plugin
- Check the plugin was updated recently and is tested with your WordPress version.
- Keep backups in a separate Dropbox folder and do not rely on a single backup copy.
- Watch your Dropbox storage: free Dropbox Basic accounts have limited space, and full-site backups add up quickly.
- Test a restore at least once, so you know your backups really work.
FAQ
Can I back up WordPress to Dropbox for free?
Yes. UpdraftPlus, WPvivid and BackWPup all support Dropbox backups in their free versions.
Can I use Dropbox as a CDN for WordPress?
No. Dropbox is not designed to serve website files. Use a CDN service such as Cloudflare or your host’s CDN instead.
Is it safe to connect Dropbox to WordPress?
Reputable plugins use Dropbox’s official app authorisation and usually only access their own app folder. Remove the connection from your Dropbox account settings if you stop using the plugin.
How do I embed a Dropbox file in WordPress?
For a single file, share a Dropbox link and add it as a link or button. For galleries or folders, use a dedicated Dropbox file plugin.

Dropbox CDN is a good one but Dropbox usually sets limit for its public folder which means for larger sites it is not a solution so they should use paid CDN. Thanks for sharing these plugins
