Ad Free Google Site Search: What Happened and Your Options in 2026

Want ad free Google site search on your website? In 2011 we used Google Custom Search on QuickOnlineTips, and its results were full of AdSense ads. The fix back then was to pay for Google Site Search. That product is gone now, so this guide explains what changed and the ways to get a search box without Google ads in 2026.

Ad-free Google site search options

Quick answer: Google stopped selling the paid, ad-free Google Site Search in April 2017. Its free replacement, Programmable Search Engine, shows ads unless you are a qualifying nonprofit, school or government agency, which can switch ads off. Everyone else can use their CMS’s built-in search, a search plugin, or a paid hosted search service.

What was Google Site Search?

Google Custom Search let any site add a Google-powered search box for free, but the results came with ads from AdSense for Search. Those ads could earn you a little money, yet they also took visitors away from your site.

Google Site Search was the paid version. When we wrote about it in 2011, plans started at $100 a year for 20,000 search queries, with bigger packages for busier sites. In return you got:

  • Search results with no ads and optional Google branding.
  • Results delivered as XML, so you could style them to match your site.
  • Deeper indexing of your pages, which did not affect your Google rankings.
  • Extras such as refinements, date biasing and On-Demand Indexing, which promised to add selected new pages to your search within 24 hours.

What happened to ad free Google site search?

In February 2017 Google announced it would wind down Google Site Search. New sign-ups and renewals stopped on April 1, 2017, and existing accounts moved to the free Custom Search Engine (now called Programmable Search Engine) when their licences ran out. That version shows ads and Google branding.

Google has since made more changes. Under its newer rules, new Programmable Search Engines are limited to searching up to 50 domains, and Google points businesses that need more to its paid Google Cloud search product (launched as Vertex AI Search).

How to get site search without Google ads in 2026

1. Nonprofits, schools and government sites

According to Google’s Programmable Search help pages, qualifying nonprofits, schools and government agencies can use the search box without ads:

  1. Register your organisation (nonprofits and schools through Google’s nonprofit programme; government agencies submit a request form).
  2. Once approved, open your search engine in the Programmable Search Engine control panel.
  3. On the Overview page, scroll to Ads and turn them off.

This applies to the search box you embed on your pages, not the paid developer API.

2. Use your website’s built-in search

If your site runs on WordPress or another CMS, its own search box shows no ads at all. Default WordPress search is basic, but search plugins can improve relevance and add filters. A good internal search is one of the essential web design elements every site should have.

3. Paid hosted site search

Hosted search services index your site and give you an ad-free search box with analytics. Popular options include Algolia and AddSearch. Large organisations can also look at Google Cloud’s enterprise search (formerly Vertex AI Search). Check each provider’s current pricing, as plans change often.

Should you keep the ads?

Ads in a free Programmable Search box can earn a little revenue through AdSense, but they can also send readers to competitors. If you run AdSense, review your settings regularly, such as the option to turn off AdSense shopping links.

FAQ

Is Google Site Search still available?

No. Google stopped selling Google Site Search on April 1, 2017, and existing accounts were converted to the free, ad-supported version.

Can I remove ads from Google Programmable Search?

Only if your organisation qualifies as a nonprofit, school or government agency. Once approved, you can switch ads off in the control panel.

What is the best ad-free site search for a blog?

For most blogs, the CMS’s built-in search or a search plugin is enough and free of ads. Busy sites can consider a paid hosted search service.

Is Programmable Search Engine free?

Yes, the embeddable search box is free but shows ads for most sites. Google’s developer API and its Google Cloud search products are paid.
