Yahoo Answers Marketing Is Dead: How to Get Free Traffic From Q&A Sites in 2026
In 2010, one of the most talked-about free traffic tricks was Yahoo Answers marketing: answer questions in your niche, link to a helpful page, and turn that traffic into affiliate sales with 20 minutes of work a day. Yahoo Answers closed in 2021, but the idea behind it, helping people where they ask questions, still drives targeted traffic in 2026. Here is how the technique worked, what replaced it, and how to use Q&A sites today without being labelled a spammer.

Quick answer: Yahoo Answers shut down on 4 May 2021, so Yahoo Answers marketing no longer works. The same approach now works on Reddit, Quora, Stack Exchange and niche forums: pick a niche, answer questions in detail, link only when your page genuinely adds more, and follow each community’s self-promotion rules. Using multiple accounts, outsourced answers or automation software gets you banned.

How Yahoo Answers marketing worked
Guest author Max Zammit laid out a simple system:
- Choose a niche you could write about every day, with products that people buy. He browsed the ClickBank marketplace for ideas and found insomnia and natural sleep a good niche.
- Find open questions in that category or by keyword search.
- Answer helpfully, then add your link in the “What’s your source?” box. Links became clickable only after you reached level 2 (250 points).
- Send visitors to a landing page, not a raw affiliate link: a page on your own domain or blog whose title matches the question, such as “natural herbs that help you sleep”, which then recommends the product.
- Answer in blocks of five to stay productive, keeping a text file of answers to common questions.

What changed
- Yahoo Answers closed on 4 May 2021 after years of falling use, and its archive went offline.
- The “scale up” advice is now spam: multiple accounts, hired answerers and software that switches accounts through proxies break every major platform’s rules and get accounts and domains banned.
- Google now shows forum answers directly in results through its “Discussions and forums” feature, so good answers on Reddit and Quora can rank in Google themselves.
Where to answer questions in 2026
- Reddit: the biggest source of forum traffic today. Each subreddit has its own rules, and many ban links from new accounts. Contribute for weeks before you ever link.
- Quora: the closest successor to Yahoo Answers. Long, expert answers with a relevant link still send steady visitors.
- Stack Exchange: the best place for technical and specialist niches, but self-promotion must be disclosed and rare.
- Niche forums and Facebook groups: smaller, but the most targeted traffic of all. See our guide to using forums as marketing tools.

How to market on Q&A sites without spamming
- Answer fully in the post itself. Don’t “leave them hanging” as the 2010 advice suggested; moderators remove teaser answers.
- Link only when your page adds real value, such as a detailed guide, a tool or a comparison.
- Disclose your connection to the site you link and any affiliate relationship.
- Build the landing page first: a helpful post whose title answers the exact question still converts far better than a raw affiliate link. Our guide to your first affiliate sale explains the basics.
- Stick to one honest account and a small daily routine. Five good answers a day still works.
FAQ
When did Yahoo Answers shut down?
On 4 May 2021. It stopped accepting new questions and answers in April 2021.
What is the best alternative to Yahoo Answers for marketing?
Quora is the closest match; Reddit sends the most traffic but has stricter rules on self-promotion.
Can I put affiliate links in Quora or Reddit answers?
Quora allows them with disclosure in many cases, but many subreddits ban them. Linking to your own helpful page is safer.

Gripping take on this publication in Attract Big Site Traffic With This Little Used (FREE) Traffic Technique. I for one have discovered many twists on this and can oftentimes recognise the traps in the arguement or process however, on this reading I am hard-pressed. My slogan – Folks are going to say what they want to do. In the final stage, they invariably do. The most we can long for is to spotlight a few things here and there that hopefully enables them to create an advised decision.
