Best Women Safety Apps in 2026 (and Built-in Phone SOS Features)

Travelling alone at night, taking a late cab or walking home after work? Women safety apps let you send an SOS alert, share your live location and call for help in seconds. Since we first wrote this list in 2012, phones have built many of these features in, so you may already have powerful safety tools without installing anything. Here are the best women safety apps and built-in phone features in 2026.

Women safety apps

Quick answer: Set up Emergency SOS on your phone first: press the side button five times on iPhone, or use Emergency SOS in Android’s Safety & emergency settings. Then share live location with trusted contacts through Google Maps, WhatsApp or Find My. In India, install the official 112 India app. Apps like bSafe and Life360 add check-ins, alarms and journey tracking.

Built-in phone safety features (set these up today)

  • iPhone Emergency SOS: press the side button five times, or hold the side and volume buttons, to call emergency services and send your location to emergency contacts. Add contacts in the Health app’s Medical ID.
  • Android Emergency SOS: go to Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS, then press the power button five times to call for help, share location and start recording.
  • Android Safety Check: set a timer when you go out alone. If you do not respond, your contacts get your location automatically.
  • iPhone Check In: in Messages, send a Check In to a friend; they are alerted if you do not reach your destination on time.
  • Crash and fall detection on many phones and smartwatches calls for help automatically.

Best women safety apps

  • 112 India (India): the government emergency response app. A panic button alerts police with your location and notifies volunteers and family.
  • bSafe: voice-activated SOS, fake call, live GPS sharing and automatic audio and video recording when you trigger an alarm.
  • Life360: family location sharing with arrival alerts and, in some countries, crash detection.
  • Noonlight (US): hold a button while walking; if you let go and do not enter a PIN, police are sent to your location.
  • Google Maps and WhatsApp live location: share your real-time location for a set time with friends or family during a trip.
  • Ride app SOS: Uber, Ola and Rapido have in-app emergency buttons and ride sharing with trusted contacts.

Tips to make safety apps work when you need them

  • Add at least three emergency contacts and tell them how the alerts work.
  • Test SOS features once (most let you cancel before calling) so you know what happens.
  • Keep location services on and battery saver from blocking the app.
  • Carry a small power bank on long days out.
  • Pair your phone with a physical tool such as a loud alarm; see our guide to self defense keychains.

Emergency numbers to remember

  • India: 112 for all emergencies; 1091 is the women’s helpline in many states.
  • US and Canada: 911. UK: 999. EU: 112.
