How to Create Custom iPhone Ringtones (iOS 26 and Older)
How can you create custom iPhone ringtones from your own music or recordings? For years it meant trimming a song in iTunes, renaming the file from .m4a to .m4r and syncing it back, the method this post first described in 2010. With iOS 26 it finally takes a few taps on the iPhone itself. Here is how to create custom iPhone ringtones in 2026, with the newest method first and the older ones for earlier iOS versions.

Quick answer: On iOS 26, open the audio file in Files or Voice Memos, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone. It then appears at the top of Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone. On older iOS versions, use GarageBand on the iPhone (Share > Ringtone), or make a .m4r file on a computer and drag it to the iPhone in Finder or iTunes.
Table of Contents
Method 1: iOS 26 “Use as Ringtone” (easiest)
- Save or record a short audio clip: a voice memo, an MP3 or M4A file in the Files app, or audio someone sent you in Messages.
- Open it and tap the Share button.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Use as Ringtone (look under More if you don’t see it).
- Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone; your clip is at the top. You can also set it for one contact in the Contacts app.
Keep clips to about 30 seconds and start on the catchy part. To remove one, swipe left on it in the Ringtone list and tap Delete. Note that songs from Apple Music are DRM-protected and can’t be used; you need your own audio file.
Method 2: GarageBand on iPhone (iOS 17 and 18)
- Install the free GarageBand app and open a song or audio file in it (via the Audio Recorder track and the loop browser’s Files tab).
- Trim the region to 30 seconds or less.
- Go back to My Songs, long-press the project, tap Share > Ringtone, name it and tap Export.
- Tap Use sound as to set it as your ringtone straight away.
Method 3: On a Mac or Windows PC
- Trim your song or clip to 30 seconds or less in any audio editor (QuickTime Player on Mac can trim) and save or convert it as AAC (.m4a).
- Rename the file extension from .m4a to .m4r.
- Connect the iPhone with a cable.
- Mac: open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar and drag the .m4r file onto the General tab.
Windows: in iTunes (or Apple Devices), select the iPhone and drag the file onto Tones under “On My Device”. - On the iPhone, choose it in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.
The original 2010 steps used iTunes’ Get Info > Options to set a start and stop time, then “Create AAC Version”. That still works in iTunes for Windows, but Apple’s Music app on the Mac no longer manages ringtones.
Tips for a good ringtone
- Pick a part that is recognisable in the first two seconds.
- Avoid quiet intros; the phone may stop ringing before it gets loud.
- Use different tones for important contacts so you know who’s calling without looking.
- Set custom text tones the same way in Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone.
