How to Spot Fake Reviews Online: 10 Warning Signs (2026)
In 2011 guest author Jessica Wagner asked whether you can tell a fake review from a real one, noting that Cornell researchers were building algorithms to detect fakes from language patterns. Fake reviews are now a bigger problem, made worse by AI-written text, and US law now bans them outright. Here’s how to spot fake reviews in 2026.

Quick answer: Be suspicious of reviews that are vague and over-the-top, appear in sudden bursts, come from profiles with few or only 5-star reviews, repeat the same phrases, mention the product name unnaturally often, or say they got the item free. Read the 3-star and critical reviews, sort by newest, and compare ratings across several sites before buying.

10 warning signs of fake reviews
- Vague praise: “Best product ever!” with no specifics.
- Review bursts: many 5-star reviews on the same few days.
- Suspicious reviewer profiles: new accounts, one review only, or only perfect ratings.
- Repeated wording across different reviewers.
- Brand name stuffing: the full product name repeated like an ad.
- Incentive language: “I received this for free” or requests to contact the seller.
- Mismatched details: the review describes a different product or variant.
- Polished but generic text that reads like AI.
- Extreme polarity: only 5-star and 1-star reviews, no middle.
- No verified purchase label where the platform offers one.
How to check reviews quickly
- Sort by most recent and read critical reviews first.
- Look for customer photos and videos.
- Compare with independent reviews, forums and video reviews.
- Use a reverse image search to see if reviewer photos are stolen.
Fake reviews and the law
The US FTC’s rule on consumer reviews bans buying, selling and creating fake reviews, including AI-generated ones. See our guide to FTC disclosure rules for businesses and bloggers.
Report fake reviews
Use the “Report” option on Amazon, Google Maps, app stores and other platforms. In the US you can also report deceptive reviews to the FTC.

FAQ
Are fake review checker tools reliable?
They can flag patterns, but some popular checkers have shut down; your own judgment and cross-checking matter most.
Are all 5-star reviews suspicious?
No. Look for patterns, not single reviews.
Can AI write convincing fake reviews?
Yes, which is why reviewer history and cross-site comparison are important.

i think the web is becoming more irrelevant as more people flood in to earn a living from it. Good info is hard to find with out finding some screwy reviewer who want to make money out of his affiliate programs. Inserting links as text about the very items they are supposedly reviewing, the unsuspecting person clicks on it believing they just read a good non biased review, which then stores a cokie and if the person buys the reviewer makes money. its all about the presell these days.
