DreamHost Promo Code: Why the $97 Codes Were Capped at $50

Looking for a DreamHost promo code? In December 2007, DreamHost capped every promo code at a $50 discount, ending the popular $97 codes that bloggers like me shared with readers. This article explains how those codes worked, why the change happened, and how to find genuine DreamHost discounts today without falling for fake coupons.

DreamHost promo code guide

Quick answer: In 2007, DreamHost affiliates could turn their $97 referral reward into a discount code for new customers, so a maxed-out code meant a $97 discount and zero commission. From December 11, 2007, DreamHost capped all codes at $50. Today, the safest way to save is to use the deals shown on DreamHost’s own website and to treat random coupon sites with caution.

How the old DreamHost promo codes worked

DreamHost runs a referral program for webmasters, then called DreamHost Rewards. In 2007 it had two options:

  • One-time payments: $97 for each new customer you referred, plus $5 for each customer they referred.
  • Recurring payments: 10% of every payment your referrals made, and 5% of every payment made by their referrals, for as long as they stayed customers.

Affiliates could share part of the $97 with new customers by creating promo codes. For example, a $90 code gave the new subscriber a $90 discount and left the referrer with $7. A $97 code gave the maximum discount and earned the referrer nothing.

Why DreamHost capped promo codes at $50

I received the DreamHost newsletter by email announcing that, starting Tuesday, December 11, 2007, no DreamHost promo code could give a discount greater than $50. All new and existing codes were capped at that amount, while the referral reward stayed at $97. That meant affiliates would earn at least $47 per referral even when someone used a maxed-out code.

QOT had been hosted on DreamHost for almost two years at the time (here are the reasons why we used DreamHost). I had sent hundreds of referrals their way with a $97 code, offered to QOT readers at zero commission, and so had most webmasters in my network. Smaller discount codes rarely worked, because so many sites offered $90+ discounts. The cap made the program far more rewarding for affiliates, and I expected a wave of aggressive DreamHost promotions on blogs.

Trivia: DreamHost had earlier allowed codes worth $99.99 and even a record $110 promo code. In 2009, the $97 promo codes quietly returned.

How to find a DreamHost promo code today

Hosting deals change often, so I won’t list codes that may have expired. Instead, follow these steps:

  1. Start on the official site. Visit DreamHost and check the current plan prices. Introductory discounts are usually applied automatically at checkout.
  2. Compare plan terms. Longer prepaid terms usually cost less per month, but check the renewal price before you commit.
  3. Be careful with coupon sites. Many “DreamHost coupon” pages list expired or made-up codes. If a code is real, the discount shows in the cart before you pay.
  4. Use a trusted referral link. If a blogger you trust recommends DreamHost, their link supports them and does not cost you more.

The DreamHost affiliate program in 2026

The DreamHost affiliate program is still running, but it looks very different from 2007. Its official page advertises up to $1,000 per approved referral, with commissions that depend on the product and plan term, monthly payouts by bank transfer, and no minimum payout. The program runs on the TUNE affiliate platform, and you don’t need a DreamHost account to join. Check the official page for the latest terms before you sign up.

FAQ

Do $97 DreamHost promo codes still work?

Don’t count on it. The old $97 codes belonged to the 2007-2009 rewards program. Check the price shown in the DreamHost cart rather than trusting an old code.

Where can I find a valid DreamHost promo code?

Start with the offers on DreamHost’s own website. A genuine discount always appears in the cart before payment.

How much do DreamHost affiliates earn now?

According to DreamHost’s affiliate page, commissions vary by product and term, up to $1,000 per approved referral, with monthly payouts.

Why did DreamHost cap promo codes at $50?

The cap, from December 11, 2007, guaranteed affiliates at least $47 of the $97 reward per referral, instead of most of it being given away as discounts.
