How to Add Your Business to Google for Free (Google Business Profile Guide)

Can your customers find you on Google? Back in 2008, Google invited Indian business owners to add free business listings to Google India Local Search by phone, SMS or online. That service has grown into Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows your shop, clinic, office or service on Google Search and Google Maps. Here’s how to add your business to Google for free in 2026, step by step.

Add your business to Google for free with Google Business Profile

Quick answer: Go to business.google.com/create, sign in with a Google account, enter your business name, category, location or service area and contact details, then verify your business (usually by a short video). A Google Business Profile is completely free, and there’s no charge to appear on Google Maps.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business, and before that Google Places and Google Local) is Google’s free business listing. Your profile can show:

  • Business name, category and description
  • Address on Google Maps, or the areas you serve if you visit customers
  • Phone number, website, WhatsApp or chat and opening hours
  • Photos, products, services, offers and updates
  • Customer reviews and your replies

When people search for “coffee near me” or “plumber in Delhi”, these profiles appear in the map results at the top of Google. That’s why a free business listing on Google is one of the most valuable things a local business can set up.

How to add your business to Google (Google Business Profile steps)

  1. Search first. Look up your business name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, choose Claim this business or Own this business? instead of creating a duplicate.
  2. Create the profile. Open business.google.com/create, sign in and type your business name. Pick it from the list if it appears, or choose to create a new business.
  3. Choose a category. Pick the main category that best describes what you do, such as “Restaurant” or “Mobile phone repair shop”. You can add more categories later.
  4. Add your location or service area. Shops and offices that customers visit add an address. Home-based and service businesses (plumbers, tutors, delivery) can hide their address and list service areas instead.
  5. Add contact details. Enter your phone number and website. No website? Your Business Profile can act as a simple free web page.
  6. Verify your business. Google will offer one or more verification options (see below).
  7. Complete your profile. Add opening hours, photos of your shop and products, services and a short description.

You can also add your business from the Google Maps app: tap your profile picture, then Add your business.

How Google Business Profile verification works

Verification proves you really own or manage the business. Google decides which methods you see, based on your business type and location:

  • Video recording: the most common method now. You record a short, continuous video showing your location or signboard, your products or tools, and proof that you manage the business (like opening the shop or a bill).
  • Phone or text message: a code is sent to your business phone.
  • Email: a code is sent to a business email address.
  • Postcard: a code is posted to your business address (less common now).
  • Instant verification: for some businesses already verified in Google Search Console.

Until your profile is verified, you can’t fully edit it, reply to reviews or add posts and products. Review usually takes a few days after you submit.

Tips to get more customers from your free Google listing

  • Use your real business name. Adding extra keywords or city names to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
  • Keep hours up to date, including holidays, so customers don’t arrive at a closed shop.
  • Add real photos of your storefront, interior, team and products. Profiles with photos get more calls and visits.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every review, good or bad, politely.
  • Post updates and offers regularly, such as new stock, festival offers or events.
  • Add products and services with prices, so people can see what you offer before they call.

List your business on other free maps too

Google is the biggest, but customers also use other maps. You can add free listings on Bing Places for Business (which can import your Google profile) and Apple Business Connect for Apple Maps on iPhones. In India, directories like Justdial are also widely used.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is completely free. Google may offer optional paid ads, but you never need to pay to be listed on Google Maps.

Can I list a business without a shop or office?

Yes. Choose that you deliver goods or visit customers, hide your address and add service areas. Online-only businesses with no physical contact with customers aren’t eligible.

How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?

After verification, a new profile usually appears within a few days, though reviews can sometimes take longer.

Does Google charge for a business listing?

No. Google doesn’t charge for a Business Profile. Be careful of callers who claim to be from Google and ask for payment to “verify” or “rank” your listing.
