ChatGPT Study Mode: What It Is and How to Use It

ChatGPT study mode is a setting that makes ChatGPT act like a patient tutor instead of an answer machine. Rather than handing you the solution, it asks questions, gives hints, breaks the topic into small steps and checks what you understood. Here is what it does, who can use it, how to turn it on (and what to do if you can’t find it), plus prompts that get the most out of it.

Quick answer: Open a new chat in ChatGPT, click the + (tools) button next to the message box and choose Study and learn, then tell it what you are studying. It is available to logged-in users on the Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans. If the option is missing, try typing /study in the message box.

What is ChatGPT study mode?

OpenAI introduced study mode on July 29, 2025 to help students “learn something, not just finish something”. In a normal chat, ChatGPT tries to give you the full answer straight away. In study mode it works through the problem with you, so you do the thinking and it guides you.

According to OpenAI, study mode uses:

  • Interactive prompts: Socratic questions, hints and self-reflection questions instead of a ready-made answer.
  • Scaffolded responses: information arranged in easy-to-follow sections, so a big topic doesn’t arrive as one wall of text.
  • Personalised support: it adjusts to your skill level, and can use memory from earlier chats if you have memory turned on.
  • Knowledge checks: quizzes and open-ended questions with feedback, so you can see what has stuck.
  • On and off switching: you can turn it on or off during a conversation.

Under the hood, study mode is not a separate AI model. OpenAI says it runs on custom instructions written with teachers, scientists and learning experts, focused on active participation, not overloading you, and helpful feedback. OpenAI also warns that, because of this, its behaviour may be inconsistent and it can still make mistakes.

Who can use study mode?

At launch, OpenAI made study mode available to logged-in users on the Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans, with ChatGPT Edu following a few weeks later. You need to be signed in to a ChatGPT account. If you are deciding whether to pay, our guide to ChatGPT Plus vs Free covers what the paid plans add.

How to turn on ChatGPT study mode

  1. Go to chatgpt.com or open the ChatGPT app and sign in.
  2. Start a new chat.
  3. Click the + button (the tools menu) on the left of the message box.
  4. Choose Study and learn.
  5. Type what you want to learn, and say where you are stuck. For example: “I have a biology test on photosynthesis on Friday and I don’t understand the light reactions.”

OpenAI lets you switch study mode on or off during a conversation. The simplest way back to a normal chat is to start a new chat without choosing Study and learn.

Can’t find study mode? Where it went in 2026

A lot of people search for “ChatGPT study mode removed” or “study mode gone”. During 2026 the Study and learn entry went missing from the tools menu for some accounts, and many users assumed OpenAI had dropped the feature. OpenAI has not announced that study mode was removed, and it is still described on its official announcement page.

If you don’t see it in the menu, try these:

  • Type the shortcut: many users report that typing /study in the message box still switches it on.
  • Start a new chat: open a new conversation and check the tools menu again.
  • Update the app: if you use the phone or desktop app, update it and check the tools menu again, or try the website.
  • Ask for it in plain words: even without the mode, you can paste one of the tutor prompts further down this page to get similar step-by-step behaviour.

How to use study mode well: 5 tips

1. Tell it your level and your goal

Study mode adapts better when it knows who it is teaching. Say your grade or course, what you already know and what you need to do (pass a test, write an essay, understand a lecture).

2. Upload your own material

You can attach notes, a worksheet, a syllabus or a photo of a textbook page and ask study mode to teach from it. That keeps the lesson tied to what your class actually covers.

3. Ask for a quiz at the end

Knowledge checks are one of the most useful parts. After a topic, ask it to test you, and answer before reading the feedback.

4. Explain it back

Write the idea in your own words and ask ChatGPT to point out what is missing or wrong. Teaching it back is one of the fastest ways to find gaps.

5. Ask for the answer when you really need it

Study mode guides by default, but it is not a lock. If you are checking finished work, you can ask it directly to show the full solution.

Study mode prompts you can copy

Paste any of these into a study mode chat and fill in the brackets:

I’m a [grade/course] student. Teach me [topic] step by step. Ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer before moving on.

Here are my class notes on [topic]. Quiz me with 5 questions, starting easy and getting harder, and explain any I get wrong.

I’ll explain [concept] in my own words. Tell me what I got right, what I missed, and one question to test me further.

I’m stuck on this problem: [paste problem]. Don’t solve it. Give me a hint for the first step only.

Make me a 7-day study plan for my [subject] exam on [date], with a short quiz at the end of each day.

OpenAI has not announced its removal. The Study and learn option disappeared from the tools menu for some users in 2026; starting a new chat, updating the app or typing /study may bring it back.

How do I turn off study mode in ChatGPT?

Start a new chat without choosing Study and learn. OpenAI also lets you switch it off during a conversation.
