How to Make YouTube Videos Load Faster: 12 Tips (2026)

Want to make YouTube videos load faster on a slow internet connection? Endless buffering, a spinning wheel and blurry video are common on weak Wi-Fi or mobile data. Back in 2011 we used YouTube Feather, a lightweight version of YouTube, to fix this. Feather is long gone, but there are better ways today. Here are 12 tips that actually speed up YouTube on phones, computers and smart TVs in 2026.

make youtube videos load faster

Quick answer: Lower the video quality (gear icon > Quality > Data saver or 480p/360p), set your default to Data saver in the YouTube app’s Video quality preferences, close other tabs and downloads, move closer to your router or use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, update your browser or app, and clear the YouTube app cache. For trips or very slow networks, download videos in the app to watch offline.

What happened to YouTube Feather?

YouTube Feather was an opt-in beta that served lighter video pages with fewer interactive and sharing features, so they loaded faster on slow connections. I tried it and liked it: light, fast and clean. You could switch back to the regular page “just this once” whenever you needed comments or sharing. YouTube has since discontinued Feather, and the modern site loads video adaptively instead, so the tips below are what work now.

12 ways to make YouTube videos load faster

1. Lower the video quality

Click or tap the gear icon on a video, choose Quality, then pick Data saver or a fixed resolution like 480p or 360p. Lower resolution needs far less bandwidth, so the video starts sooner and buffers less.

2. Set a default quality in the YouTube app

In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > Video quality preferences and choose Data saver for mobile networks (and Wi-Fi too if it’s slow). See YouTube’s help on changing video quality for details.

3. Let the video buffer briefly

Pause the video for 20-30 seconds after it starts, then play. YouTube keeps loading ahead while paused, which helps on unstable connections.

4. Close other tabs, apps and downloads

Cloud backups, game updates, other streams and open tabs all share your bandwidth. Pause them while you watch.

5. Improve your Wi-Fi signal

Move closer to the router, use the 5 GHz band for nearby devices, or connect TVs and PCs with an Ethernet cable. Restarting your router can also clear a slow connection.

6. Check your actual internet speed

Run a speed test such as Fast.com. YouTube recommends about 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K. If you’re far below what you pay for, contact your provider.

7. Update your browser or the YouTube app

Old browsers and apps can’t use YouTube’s newer, more efficient video formats. Keep Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and the YouTube app updated.

8. Turn on hardware acceleration

On a computer, make sure hardware acceleration is on in your browser settings (in Chrome: Settings > System > Use graphics acceleration when available). It lets your graphics chip decode video, which reduces stutter on older PCs.

9. Clear the cache

On Android, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage and tap Clear cache. In a browser, clear cached images and files. A corrupted cache can cause playback problems.

10. Disable heavy browser extensions

Some extensions slow down YouTube pages. Try a private or incognito window; if videos play faster there, disable extensions one by one to find the culprit.

11. Try a different DNS server

If YouTube pages are slow to start but the video itself plays fine, your provider’s DNS may be slow. Switching to a public DNS such as Google Public DNS can help.

12. Download videos to watch offline

With YouTube Premium (and in some countries for free on selected videos), you can download videos in the app over Wi-Fi and watch them later without buffering. See our guide on how to download YouTube videos for the official options.

Why YouTube videos buffer

  • Slow or unstable connection: the most common cause, especially on busy mobile networks or crowded Wi-Fi.
  • High quality on a weak network: 1080p and 4K need much more bandwidth than 480p.
  • Busy times: evenings are peak hours for many internet providers.
  • Old device or software: older phones and outdated browsers struggle with modern video.

FAQ

Is YouTube Feather still available?

No. YouTube Feather was discontinued. Use the Data saver quality setting and the tips above instead.

How do I make YouTube videos load faster on mobile data?

In the YouTube app, set Video quality preferences to Data saver for mobile networks, close background apps, and download videos on Wi-Fi to watch later.

Why does YouTube buffer even with fast internet?

Check Wi-Fi signal strength, other devices using bandwidth, browser extensions and hardware acceleration. Restarting the router and clearing the app cache often fixes it.

What internet speed do I need for YouTube?
