How to Play Minesweeper: Rules, Tips and Free Online Games (2026)

Minesweeper is the classic logic puzzle that once came free with every Windows PC, and it is still one of the best five-minute brain games. This guide explains how to play Minesweeper: the rules, what the numbers mean, the patterns that win games, and where to play it free online in 2026 with no download.

How to play Minesweeper online free in a browser

Quick answer: Click a square to uncover it. A number shows how many mines touch that square (including diagonals). Right-click (or long-press on a phone) to flag a square you know is a mine. Clear every safe square without clicking a mine to win. You can play it free in Google Search or on dedicated Minesweeper sites.

Minesweeper rules

  • Left-click (tap) a square to reveal it. Your first click is usually safe.
  • A blank square has no mines next to it, so the game opens all the squares around it automatically.
  • A number from 1 to 8 tells you how many of the eight surrounding squares hide a mine.
  • Right-click (or long-press) to place a flag on a square you are sure is a mine.
  • Click a mine and the game is over. Uncover every safe square and you win; the timer records your score.

Many versions also let you set a custom grid size and number of mines.

How to play Minesweeper and win: 6 strategy tips

  1. Start in the middle or a corner and click until a blank area opens up and gives you numbers to work with.
  2. Solve the easy numbers first. A 1 next to only one hidden square means that square is a mine. Flag it.
  3. Use chording. When a number already has all its mines flagged, click it with both buttons (or the middle button) to open all its other neighbours at once.
  4. Learn the 1-2-1 pattern. On a straight edge, 1-2-1 means the mines sit under the two 1s, and the square under the 2 is safe.
  5. Learn the 1-2-2-1 pattern. On a straight edge, the mines sit under the two 2s.
  6. Guess only when you must, and pick the square with the best odds, often a corner or a square far from known numbers.

Minesweeper rewards patience more than speed. Once the patterns become automatic, your times drop quickly.
