12 Quick Ways to Irritate Your Site Visitors (and What to Do Instead)
Want to know the fastest ways to irritate your visitors and send them straight back to Google? Most site owners do not annoy readers on purpose, but small design and marketing choices add up. Guest author Viraj Sawant listed 12 common mistakes in 2009. Many still apply, and new ones have joined them. Here are 12 quick ways to irritate your visitors in 2026, and what to do instead.

Quick answer: Visitors leave when pages are slow, covered in pop-ups and ads, play video with sound, jump around while loading, hide the content they came for, or bombard them with emails and notification requests. Fast, clean pages that answer the question quickly keep readers, and Google rewards them too.
Table of Contents
1. Pop-ups the moment the page opens
A full-screen newsletter box before anyone has read a word is the top complaint. Google also demotes pages with intrusive interstitials on mobile. Show pop-ups only after scrolling or on exit, and make them easy to close.
2. Autoplay video with sound
Nothing makes people hit the back button faster. If video must autoplay, keep it muted and small.
3. Slow pages
Every extra second loses readers. Here are our tips to increase site speed.
4. Layout that jumps around
Ads and images that load late push text down just as someone taps a link. Reserve space for ads and images so the page stays stable. If ad slots stay empty, see how to hide unfilled ad spaces.
5. Too many ads
Ads between every paragraph, sticky ads on every edge and “recommended content” walls make content hard to find. Fewer, better-placed ads often earn more over time.
6. Push notification and location requests
Asking to send notifications on the first visit annoys almost everyone. Ask only after someone shows interest, if at all.
7. Cookie banners with no easy “Reject”
Hiding the reject option behind several clicks frustrates visitors and may break privacy laws. Offer clear Accept and Reject buttons.
8. Burying the answer
Long life stories before the recipe or the fix make readers scroll and leave. Put the answer near the top, then add detail.
9. Tiny, low-contrast text
Grey text on white at 13px is hard to read, especially on phones. Use at least 16px and strong contrast; see how to optimize legibility.
10. Broken links and missing images
Dead links suggest the site is abandoned. Check regularly and fix broken links.
11. Fake buttons and misleading links
Ads disguised as “Download” buttons and clickbait headlines destroy trust instantly.
12. Too many emails
Sending “once in a lifetime” offers several times a day makes subscribers unsubscribe and mark you as spam. Email when you have something useful to say.
Bonus: generic AI fluff
Readers can now spot vague, AI-generated filler. Original experience, real examples and clear answers win.
FAQ
Do pop-ups hurt SEO?
Intrusive pop-ups that cover content on mobile can hurt rankings. Small banners and exit pop-ups are usually fine.
What is the biggest reason visitors leave a site?
Slow loading and not finding the answer quickly.
How can I find out what annoys my visitors?
Ask them, check analytics for pages with high exit rates, and watch anonymised session recordings.

By far the most irritating is embedding videos that start without playing the PLAY button
The poor navigation or not responding to comments isn’t that bad.
When a video starts playing I immediately close the window without even looking for it.
I cannot stand music or video that automatically starts! Not everyone has the same music taste and sometimes its late and you forget to turn your speakers down
Great article great read. I really like the part when you said about the players that load
Great point about slow loading sites! If your website is taking too long to load, then chances are you are losing site visitors as a result.
