Google Panda Update 25: Our Traffic Report and What Changed Since
The google panda update #25 hit on March 15, 2013, and it hit QuickOnlineTips hard. This is our original traffic report from that month, updated with what happened to Panda afterwards and what site owners hit by a quality update should do in 2026.
Quick answer: Panda was Google’s content quality filter, first launched in February 2011. Panda 25 in March 2013 was one of the last separately announced refreshes, and Google later confirmed in January 2016 that Panda had become part of its core ranking algorithm. Today the same ideas live on in Google’s core updates and its guidance on helpful, people-first content.

What Google Panda 25 Did to Our Traffic
After Panda 25, our traffic fell week after week, and at that rate it looked like it could be wiped out. Google Panda 3.2 first hit our site on January 18, 2012. From the traffic peak in January 2012, site traffic had dropped by 80% by the time of this report.
But I enjoy blogging and kept bringing readers tips and tricks. Since 2004, when this blog started, the QOT community kept growing, with nearly 25,000 RSS readers at the time and around 30,000 followers across Facebook, Twitter and Google+ (which Google has since shut down).
What Happened to the Google Panda Update After 2013
Panda 25 was expected to be among the last refreshes Google announced one by one, with Panda then rolled into regular algorithm updates. That is broadly what happened:
- 2011: Panda launched to lower the rankings of thin, low-quality and copied content.
- 2013 onward: Panda refreshes stopped being announced individually.
- January 2016: Google confirmed Panda was part of its core ranking algorithm.
- 2022 to 2024: Google introduced the helpful content system, then folded it into its core ranking systems with the March 2024 core update.

How We Fought Back
Looking back, Panda was a blessing in disguise. It pushed us to improve the site: better content, working links, less comment spam and more useful tips. Google is always changing, and not every drop is Panda. The real downside was falling ad revenue, which matters to any blogger who pays the bills from their site.
These were the fixes we worked on in 2013:
- Make the site faster
- Cut thin content
- Reduce toxic backlinks and broken links
- Tighter feed scraping control and finding copied content
- Block image hotlinking
- Less WordPress comment spam (3 million spam comments blocked)
- No more guest blogging posts accepted, and more interviews
- Longer posts with speak to type, and less time wasting
- Better server security and uptime monitoring
- More use of Bing Webmaster SEO tools and tracking bounce rate
- A more responsive design, affiliate link cleanup and moving the job board to another domain
We never sold or bought links, did link exchanges or sponsored reviews. We wanted a great site and were happy to fix issues.
What to Do After a Google Quality Update in 2026
- Confirm the timing. Compare your traffic drop with known update dates using tools to track Google algorithm updates.
- Find the pages that lost traffic in Search Console. Our guide to find pages losing traffic shows how.
- Improve, merge or remove weak pages. Refresh useful old posts, combine duplicates and prune pages nobody needs.
- Read Google’s own guidance on Google Search Central rather than rumours.
- Be patient. Quality improvements are usually picked up over later core updates, not overnight.
A reconsideration request only helps with manual actions, not algorithm drops like Panda.

what amit said, i have observed, is correct, in my e-commerce segment, blog writers who doesnot know english, their blog are at google top position. because they are new to the eworld. this inference i could draw. QOT is great blog. my site was hit a year back, but it is ok…hopefully.
Sad to see this. I know where you are coming from and I know how these two years have been. Experimenting, trial and errors, nothing works.
I am beginning to realize that there is something more than just ads, links and best practices. How on earth everyone is losing traffic? If everyone is losing, who is gaining?
I did an experiment. Just for the sake of it. I bought a domain name some 1 year back and setup a scraped tool to scrape content from different sites. This was done to see if at all the scrapers get any benefit by scraping our content.
I didn’t use Google analytics, I didn’t use Google webmaster tools. No Google Adsense either
For the first 8 months, nothing happened. I didn’t give it a thought, since its a scraped domain anyway.
However, after sometime, I noticed some activity in my Awstats logs. Indeed, the site was getting close to 40-50 visitors a day.
There is no way the site deserves even a single visitor a day, because all the content hosted there is complete junk and adds no real value. However, it still is getting traffic. It might get knocked down in some time but then, that domain is stealing the traffic that someone else deserves.
I know this sounds absurd but here is the whole thing. If a system gets flooded with an uncountable number of entities, you can’t do justice to everyone. I am not sure, but I think this has to do with the track record, age and other things related to a domain. Give more love to new players, give more attention to Freshers, less love to old ones.

Wow, after looking at your site I would have thought that this is the type that Google would want to push up to the top, not down.
To further speed up the site, I would recommend hosting images an Amazons3, speeding up up dramatically, that way any image hotlinking can be managed as well.

We are using MaxCDN to host a few popular images. We speeded up our site with changes in theme design and now are working to make it faster. I had used Amazon Cloudfront earlier.
I think you really touched on some essential points here. Now I can see how important is to improve your site speed. I am trying to do this by setting up the cache right but after I changed my homepage the results were not so good. Now I have to compress some images to get my site speed back when it was.

Try using CDN for your images. Reduce number of scripts and images – works wonders to improve site speed.
Hi Chandra, thanks for your reply. Actually i removed yoast sitemap from my blog and added google sitemap generator. Because when i open yoast xml sitemaps, it was not showing my home page url on its post page. But google xml sitemap generator is showing fine, it says 100% priority for home page.
Now i submitted new sitemap, will it create problem?. are there any problem in doing like this? please tell me

Thanks for all the good info here. I found this (via Google, naturally!) after realizing that I’d lost about 65% of my site traffic. Not fun, and not something I want to tolerate. My site is not all that great and I know it needs work, but I’d been slowly increasing in site activity until this month. Your info here gives me some ideas of things to work on.

Have you set up your RSS feed properly. I do not see a RSS icon. Also pinging has to configured correctly via pingomatic.

Nice but one question.. i do have genesis, i got a very good traffic for a particular keyword in google search, but after 3 days traffic gone down so badly that my blog went to 5th page of search from 2nd. so what could be the issue?, is it panda effect? theme problem?

Check the exact day it happened. Panda rollouts usually happen on particular days and affect many search results.
Hi, sad to hear QOT. I guess you have removed your theme. My question is does site theme impact panda update?. just for knowledge sake i’m asking.
Its good to have a fast loading clean theme. Also ad placement on the theme is very important as Google penalizes above-the-fold ad heavy sites.
This time my blog also affected by Google Panda. And it seems the blog is defenseless. My traffic almost goes down up to 80%, and it keeps going down. I don’t know what is going going on. My some of of the top posts from last three years are now creeping.
If I change Adsense placements my earnings dramatically will go down up to 60%. However RPM rate is still very good.
You have 3 adsense units above the fold in your articles. You might try reducing those.

It seems Panda 25 had a bigger impact than expected. There are not many details available as it got rolling into Google algorithm updates.
Yeah, Google is doing a fine job with this update and stuff. We have to keep ourselves updated with Google or else we’ll fall behind from the competition. It’s sad, confusing and completely insane at the same time looking at traffic drops but this is the truth guys.

i’ve seen you tweaking the design everytime there is a major panda release. i doubt it is the design, i have a feeling it is not social too… my http://www.architectural-perspective.com has so many shares, only 7 pages… yet a newly created blog i created on blogspot with the same content i copied from the parent site ranked higher than my original site… am confused.
and you are right, the joy of blogging is not there anymore.
I think it has become all about site authority and Google trust for the site. If Google believes the site has high authority, similar content will never rank higher. All the best for your site … those are a lot of shares there.
How long did you take the ad off for? You’ll have to leave it off for a decent period of time. A week or two or three might not help. Another tech blog had to wait two months and then his traffic started coming back. Also, I don’t about believing AdSense folk, they are nice and all, but they don’t know anything about the alog even though they work for Google. If you don’t want to remove it completely, you should at least move it down below the 1st paragraph or left-align the ad and have the text wrap to the right like ghacks.com does it. Just my two cents.

Hey no problem. Only other suggestion I have is to move the move the social icons below the post. You really don’t need them that high above the post title. I see why you want them there, but it’s a distraction and not necessary.
Secondly, same thing goes for the categories and tags. No one really cares about categories and tags in that position. I doubt many people click on that.
I say this because it’s doing a couple of things: firstly, you’re losing clicks on the ad which is what you want. If people read the post, they’ll like it at the bottom of the post. Or move it to the left side (floating) like some sites do.
Secondly, you’re pushing your content lower. Panda I read also penalized sites for their content being pushed too far down. You can have the content almost 100+ pixels higher if you move those social icons and categories.
Also, keep that ad in that position for at least 2 months, one month isn’t enough. I can vouch for the time frame personally.
Thanks for all your help Aseem. I am not shifting the social buttons below because it might descease social sharing as most articles are long and button would be pushed really down. I am not displaying social buttons on sides as it requires plugins and they load lots of scripts slowing the site pages. Since I shifted ad to right, in many articles images may appear early and get displaced, so the tags are used to push content a little down.
I have implemented the floated ad as you suggested once again. Lets see how it works out. :)
Hey man, sorry to hear, I’ve been getting hit by Panda since April 2011, so you had a couple more months of happiness than me. ahahha
Anyway, you should really consider removing the ad above the fold. I understand revenue will go down, but you gotta at least try it once. That could be a big reason for the continual traffic drops and at this point, you really don’t have much to lose.
Move it down in the post or move it to the sidebar, just do it and wait a month or two. Will be painful, but necessary.

I had tried earlier moving the ad unit to the sidebar and other areas. Revenue drops dramatically due to low CTR. But the traffic was not fixed. Adsense support confirmed that this single ad unit in this position could not be causing it.
Yours is a great site with quality content – I follow this website quite often – I don’t understand why Google is pressuring more on fast loading sites, well framed content, back links etc. – The concept of blogging has gone with these – earlier we use to share information about a particular topics via blogs now it is more of frequent updates, more competition, a pure blogger doesn’t know all these technicalities like improving loading time, meta tags, etc.
So apart from content – now a writer or a blogger should be aware of all these technicalities otherwise he need to hire a developer or seo expert – hiring means again a money matter – which we are not able to get due to these down times etc.

Absolutely right. The joy of pure blogging has gone away. Its become more about a race for traffic and keeping your site rising in search engines.
Really Surprised to see that other site’s have also been affected with this panda. my site technobuzzing which was receiving reasonable traffic till 14-15 march suddenly the traffic dropped and now i’m begging for visitors. didn’t know before that Panda affects the sites this much.
